Home The survey results and the growth framework

The survey results and the growth framework

When I read the results of the survey that we ran last week I knew I had done the right thing in acquiring AssociatePrograms.com.

I showed the results to my wife and we both became excited.

“What an opportunity”, we said to each other.

To be honest, I’ve been struggling with the thought of “How am I REALLY adding value to the world?”.

Sure I’ve created useful software and given lots of advice to help companies that are already making money – make more money.

I could say that I’m helping create jobs etc. which I guess is true. It’s just a bit too removed and doesn’t feel that tangible to me.

When I read the survey results, I had this sudden rush of “tangibility” of how I could genuinely help people in a real and meaningful way.

With any luck, in a way that might actually help them change their lives, the lives of their families and the communities around them. Real positive change that does actually add value to the world.

Real positive change that does actually add value to the world.

I have knowledge in the form of a growth framework that has kind of been stuck up in my head and has only really benefited a handful of companies.

I now have an audience of 35,000 people that if they are willing and able can apply this growth framework and hopefully grow an online business that gives them the vehicle to freedom and happiness.

I know that kind of sounds a bit grandiose and even cliche, but it’s hard not to explain it in any other terms.

You see, as I read through the survey results, I saw a VERY clear story.

Let me show you that story.

What I found was that most people aren’t trying to build a huge new company. In fact only 7.7% of people wanted to build a huge company. Most wanted to build either a lifestyle business, or grow a decent sized business.

Within the “other” category, most people commented on passive income and lifestyle businesses.

whatisyourprimarygoal.png

It seems that a large percentage are just starting out.

whatwouldbestdescribeyouronlinebusiness.png

But interestingly, they have been at it for a while. Over 70% of people have been doing it for more than 1 year and over half (54.6%) have been doing it for more than 3 years.

Howlonghaveyoubeenworkingonyourbusiness.png

Unfortunately, most people are not very happy with how things are going. Around 63.5% of people report that they are either dissatisfied or very dissatisfied with how things are going.

howsatisfiedareyou.png

It’s not hard to see why with over 85% of people reporting that their business revenues are less than $1000 a month. If people are working hard and not seeing the fruits of their hard work, it’s not a satisfying experience.

whatisyourmonthlyrevenue.png

Here's the interesting thing. There is, for the most part, not much of  a problem with skill level. Nearly 60% of you reported to have at least intermediate to advanced skill levels.

whatisyourlevelofknowledge.png

It also seems like most of you have enough time. I asked how many hours a week you have to dedicate to an online business and 77% of you reported that you have more than 5 hours a week to dedicate to your online business. Over half said over 10 hours a week.

As a side note, if you have less than 5 hours a week, I would challenge you on that. I know some people work two jobs and it’s impossible, but other people also waste more time than that watching TV or on social media.

Almost everyone should be able to find at least 10 hours a week to work on their business. If you got up 1 hour earlier you’ve just found yourself 7 hours of quiet focused time that can make a huge impact for forward momentum.

howmanyhours.png

But it’s very clear what is holding you back. Check out this word cloud I created from the responses. The larger the words, the more times that word was mentioned in the responses.

whatsholdingyouback.png

This was like a lightbulb moment for me. It seems like you have pretty much everything you need to be successful. You just don’t have the focus and the direction to make a difference.

It’s like trying to start a fire with a magnifying glass. You can’t keep moving it. You have to hold it steady in one place for something to catch alight.

With the amount of noise around in the Internet marketing world, this is unsurprising.

This is why I’m really excited to be giving you the very same growth framework that I’ve applied to help companies grow into multi-million dollar businesses.

Unfortunately this isn’t going to be a push button solution and requires hard work to apply the growth framework in your business.

Will 2014 be the year when you turn your business into something great?

I hope that’s the case and you’ll let me help you as much as I can.

Are you ready? Let me hear your thoughts.

I saw myself in the word cloud. Loud and clear. What a great way to visually show what most of us are experiencing and feeling. I'm very excited to see what you have in store for us. And I'm excited to know that you're excited. Thanks so much!

      Thanks Barbara!

The word clouds are great. It's easy to just look in comments for what you want to see (and find it!).

The word cloud reveals in an unbiased way the common themes that everyone is talking about. It really was striking here!

This is great to hear Jay. To be honest, after Allan decided on a long sabbatical, i jumped right into the sitesell that i have been paying for years and not doing and am busy cleaning up the site structure (day 3). I registered a domain name the year before and decided to give it a go. And late nights this week, meant that i have spent 15 "extra" hours on it. So looking forward to getting this up and running and all the best to you and all your readers.

    Hello Jay,

Thanks for putting out the survey. I have always been impressed by your motivation towards helping people earn a living online. I read your book on "How to make $1000 a month from scratch" and it blew my mind off, but focus has always been the problem for me in executing most of these business.

I can't wait to let you help me as much as you can. Thanks.

Thank you for this report. While it is a sad documentary, it did make me feel much better about my many failed efforts at creating my dream of an untethered lifestyle where I travel the world while living off of my very profitable internet business. At least I'm not alone. (Misery loves company) :-) But for all of us failures--there's a lesson in every one, failure--that is. And while our failures are often the most expensive education one can get, they are also the most useful, memorable and unforgettable, thus making them the most valuable and worth the price if we find the lesson and use the learning.

I'm actually making some progress. The book I've been working on for the last 10 years is about to be published and that's exciting for me. Hopefully it will sell, but even if it doesn't, it's a big load lightener for my already weighted down psychic overload.

I've taken most of my websites down. Some are in rehab. I'm so discouraged. It seems that nothing I've tried has produced any income--only expenses. Am I ready to give up? Hell no! I'm not giving up! I will eventually find my "groove" and even if I don't, I am thoroughly enjoying the journey.

I wish you well with your acquisition of Allen's site and look forward to see what you will do with it.

    I have expected that result.

Actually it's better then I thought of.

When I think of the people I'm working with, the results must be worst.

I'm ready to begin the process to earn money from the content that I have written. The site is "Walking Smart Now" and there is about 72 articles in it and it is a Wordpress static blog.

I would also like to become involved in social media. The response that they get I think should be valuble for my site.

    Thank you

Hi Question in what order do I focus to grow my business as there are so many variables and distractions and before you know it your miles away from where you started that’s my frustration.

      I hear you Paul.

That's exactly why I've come up with this growth framework. It factors in the noise and gets you super focused on moving forward. The shiny object problem can mostly be avoided.

I'll be sharing this over the coming weeks and pretty much everything we do with AP in the future will be within that framework.

    Jay, welcome and congratulations!

I'm one of those "lurkers" that has been reading Allan's mail for about 10 years, and have had a website(s) for that same period of time witn SBI!

My first site actually made money with AdSense when it first came out, and like a nut I sold the site. Big Mistake!

My current site is going on 3 years old next month, and it was originally created as an info site, with the intent to generate income with AdSense. That was the simplicity of the plan, but AdSense has generated a totla of $100 in those 3 years. Another lesson.

I've looked at a few other programs to take advantage of traffic, but I have also limited quite a few of the AD networks simply because I wanted to keep a lot of the "junk" off my site, such as dating, GRQ, and the like.

I have been reluctant to see any hard goods, and my one eBook I have written has sold about 20 copies in a year.

I confess to not having done, press releases, and many of the things suggested, and other than hard headedness I have no good reason.

I am retired, and the whole purpose of my site was to promote Ecuador, with an emphasis on coffee from Ecuador. I have recently taken on a project to work at reinventing a particular artisan industry which very well may result in selling from the site.

We are retiring to Ecuador in roughly 6 months, and travel within the country is expected to generate potential ad revenue in due time. But I'm not real sure just how to really take advantage of that.

So, I am all ears and eyes to hear and read what you might have in mind. Looking over the survey results, which I'm not sure I participated in, yet fit right into the greater percentage of so many, it certainly reflects most of where I am today.

    1. Don't need to make a fortune

    2. Want residual income

    3. Not real keen on selling hard goods

    a. no inventory

    b. don't want to deal with returns/dissatisfied customers

    c. looking for revenue from ad space

    d. commissions from tours

I'll be very interested in your response.
