It’s sad – in a funny, crazy way – what I see at this time of the year, every year.
As regular readers will know, Joanna and spend the southern summers in New Zealand, where we have friends and family.
We love being free to travel and able to work when and where we choose.
What’s sad and frustrating is that it’s this time of the year when old friends and family see us and are reminded of the plans they drew up last year.
They were going to be like us and have a business on the Internet.
They were going start a niche website and get a few extra dollars coming in – maybe even sack the boss eventually.
Oh, the dreams they had.
But it never happens!
They dream, and dream… They can SEE the dollars coming in. They know exactly what they’re going to spend them on.
But they never actually take the first step.
So far this trip, we’ve seen three friends and relatives who were all fired up last year ready to do great things but now they became bogged down with their busy lives. Now they’re looking back with disappointment over another wasted year.
In no time at all, next Christmas rolls around, they see Joanna and me again, sigh over the lifestyle and freedom that our Internet business gives us, and the whole sad process starts again.
I think part of the problem is the big unknown. When you’re on the outside looking on, things often seem tougher than they really are.
The challenges look tough – so our friends and relatives don’t even take the first step.
I sincerely hope that you, gentle reader, are not like that.
If you want to achieve great things, sometimes you have to step out of your comfort zone and try something totally new.
That’s what I’m doing next year.
I’m setting myself some BIG goals for 2006.
