I’ve sold AssociatePrograms.com . . . to an old friend

Associate Programs Newsletter #566        – March 12th, 2014.

Here's the big announcement I promised you last week.

I've finally decided to retire.

All my websites and newsletters have been bought by someone you might remember as part of the AssociatePrograms.com family a few years ago.

He’s set up a brand new company dedicated to growing small online businesses and improving the lives of their owners.

Acquiring AssociatePrograms.com and my other sites is part of his strategy to build the community.

More about that later. First, I'll tell you why I'm retiring…

In affiliate marketing, we're sold the dream of being your own boss, living wherever you want, and working only when you feel like it.

Well, I've been there, done that, and it's been so much better than I ever dreamed when I started. However, after 16 years with AssociatePrograms.com, it's time for a change.

Well, I've been there, done that, and it's been so much better than I ever dreamed when I started. However, after 16 years with AssociatePrograms.com, it's time for a change.

For someone whose normal attention span for a project is three years, 16 years is a very long time to spend on one thing.

My other pastimes – spending time with family, gardening, reading, kayaking, and renovating old houses – are higher priorities now.

So I'm doing you all a favor, handing over to someone who also has your interests at heart, an experienced online marketer who will do a much better job of providing you with the up-to-dateinformation and tools you need to succeed online.

That person is Jay Stockwell who was my business partner for 5 years and left to put all his energies into building software (including the highly acclaimed SpeedPPC) as well as working growing a finance company he’s a shareholder in.

I’m excited to see where he takes things. He had a deep understanding of how to grow online businesses and has orchestrated the marketing strategy for delivering close to $100 million dollars in sales online.

He’s even consulted for multi-national brands like Nickelodeon and Billabong.

Now he’s here to help you grow your businesses.

Over to you, Jay. . .

==========================
The 30 minutes that changed my life. .
==========================

It’s funny how the seemingly incidental moments can define your life.

I don’t know if I’ve ever told Allan this before, but 30 minutes of his time in 1998 completely changed mine.

I’ve known Allan ever since I was a kid, and both Allan and Joanna used to come and stay with our family when they were in town. It was on one of these trips that I was chatting to Allan and he began to tell me about what he was doing on the Internet.

When he told me how it was fairly easy to set up a website I asked him to show me.

He opened up Notepad and hit a few keys and out came HTML. When he then showed me how the HTML was changed into a visual form you could publish online, my world changed.

That day he ignited a spark in me that has never gone out.

I became obsessed with this online world and started spending night and day building sites that contained more animated gifs than I wish to admit to.

Over the next year or two they would continue to visit and I’d glean more information from him.

It was during these times that Allan gave me something even more valuable than technical skill.

He gave me a mindset and a few key pieces of information that turned my hobby site about BMX dirt jumping into my first business.

The mindset he gave me was that it didn’t matter how good a website was, if there was no traffic it was dead in the water.

The most beautiful painting in the world hung in the middle of a forest that no-one will ever see doesn’t add value to the world.

It certainly doesn’t make any money. :)

Allan gave me a few key pieces of information about SEO that dramatically changed things so that instead of getting hundreds of visitors a month, it got hundreds of thousands. Perhaps just as importantly, he taught me key things about how to turn that traffic into money.

Things may be more complex nowadays, but the opportunities are greater.

I really believe that.

We live in a time like no other and there is no need to fit into the old industrial mindsets of working for a pay check if you don’t want to.

I’ve seen the freedom that having a highly profitable online business can bring and I’m hungry to help as many people as I can make that part of their lives.

To be honest, I reckon that the “Internet Marketing” space is for the most part a joke. Seeing the mindsets and reading the advice on sites like the Warrior forum are soul destroying. I hope I can filter the noise, expose the charlatans and give you clear focused direction.

I’m excited to join this community again and my goal is not to just give a bit of surface, unstructured advice here and there.

My goal is to give you the same growth framework that I’ve used to drive millions of dollars in sales so that you can apply it to your own business.

A framework to help you create a life changing, sustainable business that adds value to the world.

Not working a loophole to make a few quick bucks, but rather building an asset that you can be proud of.

Maybe even something that you can sell one day.

Just as Allan gave to me (and for 16 years to the AssociatePrograms.com community), I hope what I’ll share with you over the coming months and years will contribute to you changing your lives for the better.

Are you going to join me? :)

    Hello Jay,

What you've stated above rings true for me also. My journey has been long and perhaps a bit drawn out because of the "money thing" ... Not having enough to set up a viable business that will look after for the long term.

So refreshing to hear you declare that the internet has evolved into a charade, for dubious marketers to con their way into grabbing great wealth no matter what sort of dubious tactics they use to get it. Then, they brag with how they've done it.

The community aspect of marketing is exactly the way I'll establish my web business. Just because you don't ever see your customer, you still have to be ethical with the way you do business with them. Even though your customer isn't physically in front of you... It's important, no vital... You are aware that you are dealing with a living human being.

That's why your word choices you choose with your "written" communication, have to be absolutely spot on to reflect your own personality, as though you are standing in front of your customer.

It's no different to talking to a customer over the phone, and projecting yourself in the way you address them with their inquiries. The ultimate aim is to have them "come in to meet you and make the sale"... By pressing the buy button on the sales page.

The process doesn't just end there either... The better you communicate over time, you make more offers then a relationship follows. The relationship strengthens and all your offers and emails are recieved well and sales will always follow.

The bonus... Your customers will always open your emails instead of deleting them.

That's when you've built the perfect relationship that will last and last...

My 50 years of working in retail and mostly for an employer has taught me a great deal about building relationships. Over that period of time I've had 15 various sales positions and the only similarity between them all was that they were sales.

Learning on the "fly" was vital for me to consolidate my standing with each position as quickly as possible. Within two to three weeks I was completely up to speed and made decent sales.

Within two months, my sales would always outpace my employer and the top sales/person. My role was to sell and provide outstanding service to customers and build relationships for my employer.

Eventually, I took great delight with helping others to develop their own "passions" with their own positions within the business. Occasionally, I've suggested to other employee's who hated their jobs, suggesting that they should leave and find something that they'll love doing.

Your desire and willingness to please in doing your job well is very difficult to hide. Guess who senses those qualities?... The customer, "always" notices... The employer also, with a smile on his face!

Fifty years serving customers still burns within my soul. Its taken some time to get "my head around" the "internet concept" and the conclusion I've come to, always keep firmly in mind that I'm helping my customers come to a successful conclusion and buy what I've suggested, to satisfy their "want".

My appologies for going on and on about sales. To be honest, selling has always been around since humanity' origins. You please others... You sell and sell and sell... Get the sale at any cost... You won't sell as much to make a decent living. Selling has always been premised on providing value to customers... Always!

    Bogdan Dobija.

I agree wholeheartedly with your thinking. It's spot on.

Allan, Yours was the first email list I subscribed to many years ago. You created a spark in me that has not gone out. After dabbling for several years, I am about to embark on IM as a "second career". Thanks for all you've done. You've helped more people in more ways than you can imagine. Enjoy your retirement... you've earned it. To your continued success, happiness and good health. Godspeed.

Hope for great new things to come. One thing I noticed in AssociatePrograms.com most of the stuff covered seems to revolve around SBI. I personally find SBI clunky and too old-school, but then again I havan't used it in 5 years.

Congratulations to you, Allan Joanna! I am very happy for you. When you spoke at my Ecommerce 2000 event in Hawaii I could not have imagined your level of future success and the value of your leadership in the affiliate marketing world.

You and Joanna and I had a private breakfast together during that event and I remembered thinking "What a wonderful down-to-earth couple this is." You have always shared your knowledge with generosity and good will.

You will be missed... but I am sure you will continue to benefit others as you move to this next phase of your life.

I wish you only the best that life has to offer.

Thank you for many years of excellence.

    Good for you.

I started my first affiliate site (hotel reservations) in 1997. If I recall, I found you about the same time. I think you may have pointed me towards the first pay-per-click system. I think it was GoTo which became Overture or vice versa. I worked out a system to have over 100,000 keywords at $.01 each. Made a lot of money. Thought that was my retirement plan.

But things change and I couldn't find a way to keep it profitable. Click rates required a minimum of more, hotels.com came along, click fraud and Google changed the entire landscape. Still eek out $1000/year in the same system.

Keep trying something new but not able to put in enough time to make them work.

Thanks for being there for me. Still read your emails as soon as they come in.

Allan, you will be a great loss to the world of online marketing. I have been a subscriber to your newsletters for many years and in that time I have subscribed to, and unsubscribed from countless other newsletters but you are the real deal, a rarity amongst the many charlatans that Jay mentioned. I wish you a long, happy and healthy retirement, and thank you for everything :-)

Jay, it's great so see you back with Associate Programs, at least we know that Allan is leaving it in safe hands. I wish you every success and look forward to seeing what you have planned.

    Dear Allan

I have to confess, I am not one that has used your services much at all, largely due to other comittments. However, I recall when I frst signed up with you a couple of years ago and just found the tone of your emails/correspondence very delightful.

I felt a beautiful vibration from you and smiled to myself about that.

After reading your email today, I felt compelled to respond and personally wish you a heartfelt farewell.

I wish you goodness and light in all you endeavors and may you continue to be happy and successful in all that you do.

I am always amazed at the power of the internet and how people connect at a deep level even over the airwaves (so to speak). I felt this when I read your email this morning and thought to myself, ahhhh Allan's retiring and felt it as I would a friend or a neighbour etc.

Anyway, all the best to you.
