1. New! Associate programs forum
================================
Looking for a place to discuss associate programs? Want to give some good advice, ask a question or just let off steam?
I've set up a brand new message board for everyone interested in associate programs:
Message boards serve two main purposes. You can use them as a source of useful information because people love to show off their knowledge (while subtly promoting their own site). They can also be a way of attracting people to your site.
The Associate Programs Forum allows you to add a clickable URL – and a banner or graphic.
The forum will be lightly moderated. Why not pop over now and ask a question or post some good advice?
I'd like to see the Associate Programs Forum become the most popular place on the Net for discussing associate programs. Please tell your friends about it.
[UPDATE: The Associate Programs Message Board is online now.]======================================
2. Spree.com's “up to 29%” commissions
======================================
This letter persuaded me to take a closer look at Spree.com and seek some answers from Spree.com partners and from Spree.com management:
Allan,
Great website, BTW! Great design and lotsa good info. Keep up the good work. :.)
BTW, I noticed how highly you're recommending and are promoting Spree, so I went to their SIP (Spree.com Independent Partners) site. Looks like a great program. Just wondering how you're actually making out with this? Any commission checks from them yet?
As to the actual commission percentages we can earn thru spree, I'm wondering if there's some misunderstanding or confusion on your part (or at least it “sounded” like there was). The info on your website at AssociatePrograms.com seems to imply a 29% commission from gross “SALES”:
“You refer someone once, and then earn up to 29% commission, paid on all products and on all visits…”
What you forgot to mention at your website was that this 29% commission was from gross PROFITS and not from gross SALES. (Check out the Spree compensation page once again). We need to ask Spree what their typical “gross profits” are. (At least knowing what their average or guesstimated average gross profits would be helpful since we base our commissions on this figure. If, for example, gross profits are 20% (typical figure for alot of retail/mail order items) then a 10%~29% commission from this 20% figure would give us anywhere from a 2%~6% actual sales commission figure of the original retail price.
I'm sure some items will have higher or lower gross profit percentages depending on what they were. :.)

I have been a member with them for over 4 months, and I didn't make any money. Actually, I called them once, and they told me I made $0.50 – As of now, I have 65 partners and 35 members in my group. So far I sent them over 2000 hits, but I am not really promoting them fully on my site. I just think that making only $0.50 after I sent them over 2000 hits is a waste of my traffic.

I am a Spree Partner too, but sorry to say, with 12 people in my downline, no one seems to be selling anything. I have been in since November of 97, and have not had one sale . . . LAST CHECK WAS FOR $93.24
Bill Barshinger says that to achieve sales a lot of sign-ups are needed, “but then the store sells itself somewhat. “I have had two commission checks so far, mostly from work done from SIPs (Spree.com Independent Partners) below me. So now I am trying to increase my personal sales as well with some content pages. Last check was for $93.24 which for network marketing is a bit of a wake-up call.”
…
My statement on the www.AssociatePrograms.com site that Spree.com pays partners up to 29% of all referrals came straight from Spree.com's Online Marketing Manager, Allison Ector. So I asked Allison to comment. Here's her answer:
Your visitor is correct – our compensation percentages (up to 29%) are based on Gross Profits (details provided at https://www.spree.com/sip) rather than sales volume. Spree.com's gross profits range from 20%~40% with 29% as an average example that we use. If a particular product has a gross profit of 20%, your visitor's example would be correct (a 2%~6% commission on the retail price). Although we still provide the highest percentages, and greatest rewards, we will soon add an even greater incentive for SIPs in this comp plan. Unfortunately, I can't tell you about it yet, but you'll be very pleased.
Talk to you soon,
Allison.
(So, just to make sure everyone understands, you'll need a lot of sign-ups and a lot of sales to make money from Spree.com. However, I still like it. I see it as investment for the future. Just imagine . . . the people I'm signing up could still be shopping at Spree when I'm 100. Through its associate program, Spree.com is creating an enormous, valuable database of people to promote its site. It will be interesting to see how Spree.com uses that opportunity. Right now, most people signing up are obviously more interested in marketing than shopping. Perhaps a hobby site with links to related books at Spree.com would do much better. If you have a Spree.com success story, I'd like to hear it. And no, I haven't received any commission yet. I've been a partner less than a month. – Allan.)
If you haven't joined the Spree.com fun yet see:

[UPDATE: I signed up 200 partners and a few months later was owed $1.12. I'm very sorry, folks. I made a mistake. That complex commission structure disguises the fact that it is very difficult to earn commissions. Spree.com is NOT recommended.]========================================
4. Building an online community – Part I
========================================
By Gordon F. Currie
(Gordon's Rivenguild.com attracts
more than 13,000 visitors a day.)
Introduction
Building an Online Community is not something we can cover in a few paragraphs. But what I do plan to do is provide you with a overview of how we have set up ours and provide some tips on setting up a successful Online Community.
In the spring of 1997, after running a number of web sites for various businesses I am involved with, I decided to create a online community for MYST & RIVEN fans. MYST and RIVEN are two of the top selling adventure games created by CYAN Inc. and marketed by Broderbund. MYST has sold over 3 million copies and RIVEN about 1.2 million in the first 4 months of sales. Originally I established the MYST & RIVEN Links / Bookstore web site that created a great deal of traffic (and continues to do so).
My Online Community was named RivenGuild (I was able to get permission from the creators of Riven to use the name in my domain). The web site started with about 8 pages and quickly grew to over 90 pages with a number of specialized areas. After 6 months, this web site has grown to over 4 million hits a month and about 13,700 visitors a day.
In the first part of our installment on Online Communities, I wanted to cover some Tips for those starting out.
1) GIVE PEOPLE A REASON TO VISIT – When building an Online Community, you want to create a warm and friendly experience and encourage people to visit. Many sites created today lack the quality content required to keep people coming back. Look at the Online Community and ask yourself “What reason is there for me to return to this site? What really stands out and captures my attention?”
2) INTERACT WITH YOUR VISITORS – The number one goal to ensure success in your Online Community is to interact with people visiting the site. This can include offering free downloads, contests, galleries, a what's new area that is kept up to date, message boards, chat, email newsletters and more.
3) UPDATE THE WEBSITE – It is imperative that you update the web site 3-4 times a week if not daily.
4) MONITOR TRAFFIC – This is one area that many webmasters talk about but few focus on watching the traffic on the site. It is not enough to say “We are getting 100,000 hits a day.” You need to analyze the site traffic and figure out how people are finding the site, when and where do they leave, how long did they stay on the site, etc. Access to referrer logs will tell you who is linking to you and what search terms people are using to find you site.
5) ONLINE MORALS – This is an area I have found has increased traffic on my sites. Take a stand against abuse on the site (in terms of message posting on web boards and chat) and promote family values. As an example, I had an individual post abusive comments on one of my public message boards that was offensive to women. I removed the message and posted publicly my feeling on this. I also developed an “abuse policy” to deal with these sorts of things. One day I shut down the site message boards to draw attention to the fact they are a free resource and are not to be taken advantage of. The result . . . increased traffic, visitor loyalty and loads of support from advertisers wanting to associate themselves with our site based on our fair treatment of women and minorities.
6) USE OF COLOR AND GRAPHICS – Don't be afraid to dress up the site with lots of color and graphics. Create a pleasing site to the eye and people will wander around.
7) BE CREATIVE WITH ADVERTISERS – Most web sites are supported with sponsorships and banner advertising. Many web sites simply sell space and that is it. Our approach to banner advertising was a package approach. In addition to banners, we promoted our supporters on our mailing list, announced to site visitors who was on board and made it clear that the advertisers were helping us stay afloat. We would profile the odd product that related to our site and heavily developed the bond we had with advertisers. This is one are that is worth investigating. In Part II, I will be expanding on this area.
In closing, building an Online Community can be a lot of fun and very rewarding. In Part II , we will continue to provide tips on setting up an Online Community. To review RivenGuild, stop by https://www.rivenguild.com

5. An offline marketing trick
=============================
By Angela Smith
Most people involved in associate programs know about online marketing tactics. Free For All (FFA) Lists, free classifieds, link and banner exchanges, reciprocal links, newsgroup postings, etc. But how about marketing offline? How do you go about doing that?
Here's a neat little trick I have found that works. I make up some business cards (200 or so) on my computer listing my URLs that are linked to my associate programs. I then take about two hours a month and visit all my local libraries. I look up all the computer, Internet, and WWW related books and place a card in each one.
I've received several visitors and I've signed up at least two distributors for my efforts. To top it off, I get to see new books that come out with each trip. I've been thinking about taking it a step further by putting cards in books that relate to the associate program as well.

6. Goldrush tracking gets cautious approval
===========================================
GoldRush got off to a rough start. Like many innovative high-tech companies, it experienced early problems and has worked hard to solve them. Mark G. Ryan, President of GoldRush, wrote this report, which is followed by some tough questions I put to him, and his answers.
GoldRush Affiliate Tracking Systems
Realm-One.com
By Mark G. Ryan
We provide the necessary technology so online retailers can easily build, track and manage an affiliate network for their online business. By offering many one of a kind features such as instant advertiser sign-up and activity reports accessible 24 hours a day on the Net we succeed in making the difficult job of managing an affiliate network easy. GoldRush can set any website up to track affiliate transactions in a matter of hours. We also help with marketing of each vendor's affiliate network by either offering free advice or placing their banners on our site. By offering three different set-up plans there is sure to be one that matches your marketing needs.
What it means:
To Vendors:
Get more people to your site without spending thousands up front on advertising? Pay for advertising only when it works for you to create sales! Your advertisers (because they want to make money) will display your ad throughout their website in well seen places. Quick fact: Some of the Net's leading websites have affiliate networks that generate up to 70% of their profit.
To Affiliates:
The chance to earn extra money with your site through our vendors. Affiliates can check a password protected web page at any time for live sales information so that you know how much they are to be paid. As a third party we provide affiliates with a way to report vendors who don't pay them. If we need to, we will terminate all services to that vendor.
Something beyond business.
The ultimate goal here is to provide opportunity, opportunity for everyone to either expand or begin an online business. In the off-line world it requires thousands of dollars, endless hours of work and sacrifices to start your own business. With the technology of the Internet we all can begin a lucrative business in our spare time with nothing more than an Internet account and a computer. It's already easy to make your own website, but now we aim to provide another step. We make it easy to become affiliated with the vendor of choice and begin selling goods or services with your website. How much more more opportunity can be provided? It's all there.
QUESTIONS AND ANSWERS:
What early problems has GoldRush had in setting up the system and how have you solved them?
The largest hoop we have managed to jump through thus far was the set-up process. Initially we let companies get started for free and set themselves up with the technology. The problem we encountered was that many people would sign up and then never get set up. Nine out of ten would disappear. I guess people just thought it would be like many other more common services out there and only take a second to do. It's not that simple. The other problem is that everyone's website is different. The ordering process is different so there can't really be one common set of instructions or system.
The solution is that we set up all of the vendor's website for them. To take care of our programming costs, we now charge a basic (Plan A) set-up fee of $US250 to get started. We also now offer a custom set up (Plan C) where we set up sites with a custom made tracking system. Even sites which don't sell a thing can market their site very well using an affiliate network in different creative ways. Our programmers are to a point now where they love to be challenged to do the impossible.
Since we are on the topic of problems, let me tell you about another we had.
Originally it was free to sign up, we made our money from a $12 set-up fee charged to website owners to sign up as affiliates. Even though we know for a fact that most site owners don't have a problem paying $12 to sign up, some potential vendors winced at the thought of charging. To solve that problem we now have three set-up options. Two of them don't charge an affiliate set-up fee at all. Instead there is a monthly charge to the vendor. The first 75 affiliates of each are just $100. The monthly charge scale is at Realm-one.com
Do you still have problems you are trying to solve?
There will always be problems, as soon as you let yourself think that it's perfect you are just fooling yourself. The goal is to keep moving and stay ahead. If you stop then you have beaten yourself. We are our harshest critics but all in all everything has seemed to finally bonded together. Everyone here now has a good idea of where it's all going. GoldRush has been “under construction” for almost a year now, it took about a million problems to solve. The idea came from air to a solid business pioneering a new industry and doing very well. We are currently negotiating big deals with three Fortune 500 companies.
How do your respond to attorney Mark Welch's comment that GoldRush “appears to be vaporware”?
https://www.markwelch.com/bannerad/baf_commission.htm
Nobody here has ever talked to him or discussed anything with him so he has just seen the site. Walking down the street and judging anything because of one look is just wrong even though many do it. There he says “charges affiliates a $12 up-front fee”. That proves he hasn't seen the site in some time. If he is talking about the fact that we do not sell people actual software it's because every account is different and the code has to be written differently each time we install the system. Software is unnecessary and just an excuse to charge a thousand dollars. The set-up fees we charge for the different plans pay us for the time it takes to set the system up on vendor's website.
Has GoldRush had any problems with USAauction?
Linincott's USAauction site is having its problems. That's because they are a successful company in the off-line world and just learning the online ways. There were many problems with the installation of our system to their site that we overcame. The entire site was made from c++ templates so they had to be customized. I guess auction sites are just one big program that gets continuously updated. We can overcome any problem.

7. New option for running your own associate program
====================================================
By Tim Watson
Hello, my name is Tim Watson. I run a site called Solution Scripts at https://solutionscripts.com . We have recently created two scripts that might be of interest to you and your visitors at AssociatePrograms.com. They will allow any business or web site to run an associates program.
The first script called Click It is run as a pay-per-click program, where sites sign up, and then are given code to place on their page, and thus click-throughs are tracked. It comes with a very detailed admin script that allows complete control over the entire program. We also are set to release The Comish on Friday, which allows a site or business to pay associates based on referrals to sales. The admin can choose to pay a certain percent or any fixed value to the associate. As with Click It, The Comish is a complete package, a turnkey script.
If you would like to see these scripts in action, or learn more about them, please come on over to https://solutionscripts.com/vault or send me an email at solutions AT solutionscripts.com
We also are working on a section we call Advertising Solutions, all about banner advertising and making money on the Internet in general. We would like permission to include a brief description of your site and a link to it.
Thank you …. Tim…

9. One & Only keeps growing fast
================================
Mike Curtis, marketing manager of One & Only Internet Personals, says it now has 10,800 associates, putting it third in size behind Amazon.com and CDNow. Each of those 10,800 associates has its own web site. One reason for its popularity is that partners get credit for repeat or return business.
[UPDATE: OneAndOnly eventually closed.]===========================
10. Remember your signature
===========================
Always add your signature to your e-mail, even if writing to a friend. I keep receiving e-mail from people who don't include a signature at the end of their e-mail. Big mistake! Often when I hear from people, I want to click to their sites to see what they've been up to since my last visit. So please, make it easy for me. Who knows? I may even buy something while I'm there.
==================================
11. Is your site designed to sell?
==================================
A recent survey of Australian web sites found that 44 percent of them did not clearly communicate the purpose of the site, 63% provided poor navigation, and 65% did not provide information in a structured manner.
Other problems included a lack of consistency between the look and feel of page designs.
“Users will go elsewhere if they don't get what they want quickly,” says Malcolm Raymond, manager of the Australian Multimedia Testing Centre.
With that in mind, it may be a good idea to take a look at your site with fresh eyes. Ask yourself: Will a new visitor know immediately what the purpose of this site is?
Here's an example of a nice, clean attractive design:
Barry Musteen's
Our Latin Thing
https://www.ourlatinthing.com
I'm not saying it's brilliant, but you can tell at a glance the site's purpose and easily see a choice of destinations. Good work, Barry.
====================================
12. What's your most important link?
====================================
Ask yourself: “What is the most important link you want people to click on?” I did that about a week ago ago. I then took a close look at my main page. It's so cluttered and jam-packed that the most important link…
My favorite associate programs
…was hard to see. So I made it bolder, in more interesting type – and repeated it. Result: the next day was my best ever for signing up new people from that page.
===========================
13. Strong selling position
===========================
The bottom right hand of a page, just before a visitor leaves, is a strong selling position. A strong selling link should be in that position or close to it. The last time I looked at the Australian search engine https://www.anzwers.com.au it had only one tiny ad on its main page: in the bottom right-hand corner.
==============================================
14. Please! Don't just pile up lots of banners
==============================================
I've lost count of how many web sites I've seen which are little more than a stack of banners piled on top of each other. If you're still doing that, ask yourself: Why will anyone want to return to this site? What content can I add to make people want to return?
=============================
15. Find a less crowded field
=============================
A seemingly endless number of web sites are offering advice on Internet marketing. If you're thinking of joining the crowd, try going to any search engine and search for “web marketing”. Now, do you really want to compete for search engine rankings with those experts and everyone else?
Is there some hobby or subject in which you are already passionately interested? Why not develop a site based on that subject? See how Gordon Currie has done it with Rivenguild.com. Perhaps your site could become the must-see site in your field.
One advantage: If you have a specialist interest topic, you can then use associate programs to sell books, magazines or other complementary products in a way which will be useful to your visitors. And you should actually achieve sales, instead of just signing up people who want to sign up people . . .
======================================
16. Write-ups work better than banners
======================================
I've been signed up with web hosting company Virtualis [UPDATE: Now Hosting.com] for a few weeks and have been steadily signing up partners – usually one or two a day. I believe I've been successful because I've gone to the trouble of giving prospective customers something persuasive to read about high quality web hosting instead of merely posting a banner.
Work it out for yourself: If you merely plonk down a banner, perhaps 1 to 3% of your visitors will click on it. And of them, perhaps 1 to 3% will actually sign up when they get to the desired destination.
So you have to work hard to get more people to click through to a company's site. You could do a lot more than I have – re-writing some of the Virtualis promotional material and putting it on your own site, for example.
=============================
17. Free shopping cart system
=============================
GTA Technologies, Inc. https://www.gta-tech.com has announced what it says is the first *free* Online Internet Shopping Cart System available to Internet merchants worldwide.
GTA says that even novice Internet users can create professional, dynamic, secured order forms for use on their Internet store fronts. “This cutting-edge system also eliminates the need for time consuming CGI scripting, HTML programming and costly computer consulting fees.”
I haven't tried this free shopping cart and have no affiliation with GTA. It sounds almost too good to be true. If anyone tries it, I'd appreciate a review.
