Post subject: Is there any value in Alexa rankings ?
|

Hi, all!
I just wonder: I read about alexa on their about site about me!! and I understand that this is a proprietary ranking mechanism. Last night I was ranked as 294.000 tonight I am ranked as 237.000. I understand that it is because of the number of visits (or?), but what is the reality behind the figures? My site is only 3 weeks old; I am not registered in any search engine yet (sitting back and waiting of course). How do they know this about me when I'm not searchable through Google or any other search engine? How do I (we) relate to Alexa rankings? _________________ DatabaseDesigner

Alexa rankings are derived from visitors who have the toolbar installed (predominately Webmasters). So those of us who have visited your site caused your rankings to improve.
Not bad, not good, more just a reflection since some visitors who have the toolbar installed aren't webmasters
If you do a search on the forum for Alexa toolbar, Alexa rankings, etc., you will find more detail about it.

The nearer your ranking is the to No.1, the more accurate the rankings are. Alexa explains that on its site.
I wouldn't place much importance on the rankings until you get well above 100,000.
Also, the rankings are extremely good for comparing like with like, for example comparing CJ and Be Free. They're not much use if you try to compare a marketing site (which tends to be visited by people who use Alexa) with a non-marketing site. _________________ Allan Gardyne

Hey, DBD -
Alexa is just another way to *try to* compare "oranges with oranges."
Alexa is no more perfect than any of the other proprietary systems because Alexa does not have 100% penetration (even Microsoft or Windows does not have that dominance.)
So, while it's good to take all results with a grain of salt, at least Alexa is relatively consistent in its inaccuracies, with some exceptions. And I disagree that it's mostly webmasters who use Alexa. That comment does not fit into my experiences with the Big Players or anyone else I know ...
God Bless you, and Happy Holidays -

I'm curious. If Internet marketers aren't swelling the numbers of the 10 million who have downloaded Alexa, who do think are? _________________ Allan Gardyne

I looked at the blurb on the site and didn't really understand it.
Does Alexa Booster genuinely help you receive more visitors to your site, or does it just make it LOOK as though you're getting more traffic?
Are you prepared to share your traffic stats before and after using it? _________________ Allan Gardyne

I just took a look at the site. What it SOUNDS like to me is this:
You download a tool that visits your site multiple times. It uses different proxies so Alexa is fooled into thinking that numerous people are visiting your site. Thus boosting your rankings.
Part of what scared me away, is the fact they mention that you can use the same Proxies as the ones you use in a mass mailing package. IE: spam...
So I think the "booster" is just a scam to get you to buy their product. And that it artifically inflates the Alexa rankings... _________________ Eric D. Burdo

My site and Manxman's site have the same age. Manxman is good at publishing good, honest articles. I have some myself. We link to each other. Manxman has an established link from a MAJOR player, I'm still waiting for acceptance. Manxman's been ranked by Google. I haven't.
Alexa rate me at 237.000. It ranks Manxman at 1.126.000.
THAT DOESN'T FIT, SORRY !
I think it is only because more people with Alexa toolbar installed has visited my site (you, my friends) perhaps because I have posted in this forum more than Manxman (and therefore being looked up by you).
In my opinion, the two of us are very much alike, but Alexa ranks me far better a factor of 4/1). I cannot find ANY reason for that, other than the above mentioned.
What do you think, friends? _________________ DatabaseDesigner

I stand by my assertion that the majority of the Alexa toolbar users are webmasters and consequently, when we visit sites from forums like this to help someone out (as we do here), we may cause your site to jump up in ratings at Alexa.
Once you get below that 100,000 mark though, the effect of forum visits to help would be less, and more accurate traffic data (with graphs!) give a much better reflection of true value and ranking.
My 2 cents,

Yess, Debs, I was beginning to think that way, and I believe you are right. Furthermore, when I visited Alexa the other day, they indicated that due to my ranking I should have approx. 76.000 visitors/days (or month; whatever). As the song from the movie : ' Heaven, I'm in heaven, dancing cheek to cheek...' Feels more like a slap on my face
The bottom of it is: I won't care about Alexa rankings anymore, until I'm < 10.000 ................. _________________ DatabaseDesigner

Remember your ranking is relative to your topic also ... I have a great Alexa ranking, but not the greatest traffic. That's ok for now. I know as time goes on, more pages, more info, more links, traffic is only going to improve.
What the Alexa ranking tells me now is ... I have the site to get the traffic my ranking implies, now to get the rest of it

That's exactly what I mean ... maybe not "deserve" but more a crystal ball of the future ... Alexa implies the site will work because I am below the 100,000 mark ... and honestly, it does. It's very profitable, especially considering the traffic I am getting ... great conversion rates ... so once traffic increases (through the items mentioned above) it could be one of the "retire on this" sites However, I am not "waiting" for that ... I have more pages to do, more sites to build, with the same concept of content, content, content with a great USP.
