Hi --

Before writing this, I checked our stats at Google Analytics. We're getting an average of 958 unique and new visitors daily to Dog Owners Digest.

There's really no secret to accomplishing that.

1. It's much easier to write helpful copy for small groups of people who have one common bond. You then are able to understand the needs of the group and satisfy that need by way of copywriting. In our case, the niche is what we refer to as "highly bonded dog owners."

2. We research and write original copy. I love this topic area. I was the director of PR for a veterinar y college for eight years, and my PR agency has worked in the pet industry/human-animal interactions arena for decades. Knowledge, contacts and passion helps.

3. We spent a considerable amount of time locating several keywords that, in comparison to others, were used often in daily searches and had a smaller number of pages delivered, based upon Google results.

4. The result of that hard work resulted in several of our articles getting second place in Google for those keywords.

5. Second and third place at Google, even for smaller numbers of searches, results in great traffic. It compounds with each article you add.

I use Google analytics to tweak the site, using the funnel tool there to see if conversions are happening as planned.

It's not rocket science. It is hours and hours of work. And -- our first focus is on helping dog owners. That makes getting to our monetizing goal come more naturally.

I've been an entrepreneur the majority of my 35 working years. I have never been successful when I set my sites on the money first and service second.

People are smart. They'll understand your modus operandi quicker than you might believe.

So find something you truly, truly enjoy -- and then be sincerely helpful.

That's my two cents.

Lot of really good information here. Here is what I have to contribute that is not a rehash of the other good information.

I found that giving stuff away at other sites has generated considerable traffic. For example, I posted two spreadsheets I created at Vertex42.com as this is generating 15%-20% of my daily traffic at one of my sites. On my other site I posted some free educational materials at planet source code. This yields me traffic as well.

I am not doing 100% organic. I am a newbie to all this web marketing stuff (and while fun is sure a lot of hard work). I have gone from 100% of my traffic coming from adwords to 30% coming from other sources. Since my sites mostly involve content I found Alan's 77 Ways to Get Traffic to be invaluable. I have focussed on blogging and writing articles using Isnare (jury still out on effectiveness here).

I think once I get into the DMOZ directory this will be a big boost. The best stuff I heard all said is to be patient.

I know for myself it is real easy to get sidetracked and forget that the real way to get traffic is to focus on fresh quality content that people want. This will keep folks coming back.

Thank you all for a really great discussion. It was most helpful to me...and no one did any overt/covert promotion Smile

Hi Sunni, I hope you're remodeling doesn't hurt those superb results. Right now your main page looks rather peculiar when viewed via Firefox. It looks fine via I.E.

Maybe you'd better concentrate on the remodeling, not article writing, for a while?

Sunni, how do you get 958 uniques daily and yet have an Alexa ranking greater than 600,000?

Allan --

Yes, we learned of that one yesterday, after a home page tweak was done. It looks fine in f-fox in 640x800 res but not in higher res. It looks fine in IE in higher res. So we have three out of four, sigh.

Designing for the different browser res can sure be an experience that contributes to balding. Did you get your home page tweaked for 640? I haven't looked in some time.

You bring up a good point. Content building and monetizing activities can often take a back seat to the mechanical aspects of site construction.

Warm regards....

Stephen:

I don't know.

I don't concern myself with Alexa rankings.

However, now that you raise the question, I do know that Alexa collects information from users who have installed Alexa. I'd gamble on the majority of our target not having it installed (or caring to).

Regards...

well, i would take the 1000 uniques over the Alexa ranking any day too Smile i would say you are right about your audience not having an Alexa toolbar.

Nobody can tell you. There is to much to take in when it comes to determining a sites success.

For example,

Different topic sites are easier to get traffic than others.

Some sites are easier to promote than others as there are more places to promote them.

Some sites earn more than others so that you can actually pay more for your paid advertising which will result in a quicker gain of traffic.

Some sites are more viral than others which will also gain traffic.

There is to much to consider.

Hi,
there is an easy way you can get 500 hits to your site in one day. It will take you about 2 hours to get credits to achieve this using traffic exchanges. I've made a description on how to do that at

Yes, Wikipedia, a good idea.

Not an authority on it, but my guess is you really need useful and relevant info to add, or links will be killed by other editors. Editors not interested in your business.

I made some videos of a nature area here. Found the Wikipedia page for it, and added links to videos. Links still up, traffic daily.

For about $10.00, you can sumbit an ad to over 10 ezines with over 10,000 subscribers, it is a great way to get many targeted hits

Not sure yet, about how to get 500 visitors daily, but from SE's free listings is quite difficult in my experience.
Maybe a webmaster with 200 pages in the long tail marketing.

I'm trying right now to explore other avenues.
Free Exchange? Maybe if you're selling biz opportunities, MLM etc.
For real stuff I don't see how I can sell something to other sellers.
