It is interesting to see someone like Super Affiliate Rosalind Gardner talk up blogging over pay per click advertising as the most effective way to get traffic fastand consistently to your website.
If you know anything about her she has always felt that pay per click advertising when done correctly was the fastest and most effective way to build your internet business.
I am a full time internet marketer now and I spend only a couple hundred dollars in programs costs and advertising. This is possible because of 3 things primarily.
1. Article writing and submitting
2. Forum marketing
3. Blogging and pinging
I don't buy hits to my website. I don't do pay per click advertising. I don't do ezine advertising. etc. etc.
I have done and still do search engine optimization on my pages and I add fresh content to my site all of the time. In the long run now (part time the past 4 years) this has paid off and is a good investment in your future.

congratulations.
And, you are right. If you are good at seach engine optimization, you don't need to depend upon paid traffic.
However, seo takes considerable amount of time and effort while paid traffic when carefully chosen, can bring good results in a short amount of time without much effort.

Yes paid traffic is great for immediate results. As long as you pay the traffic will continue. I think it depends on the site.
Most of what I do are portal sites that offer training and articles on a topic and I build them into large websites. I get traffic to them as much thru the sub pages as the home page.

I have always found that free traffic has done better and converted better on my sites. The reasons for this is because alot of traffic like in Adbrite, Adengage, buying traffic on other sites sometimes also means that you will get some fraudulent traffic with the main real traffic.
With free traffic then why would a webmaster or website want to send you fraudulent traffic, what would they gain out of it.
