I have read it is reommended to register a domain for 10 years, but now with this bad godaddy thing in mind, is it really good?
I am then 10 years dependent on that registrar or lose the paid money if I want to change?

When people first started talking about the Google patents and things Google "might" do with its algorithm, I registered my most important domain for 10 years. The way I see it, in a competitive industry, you need every tiny bit of help you can get. This might help. I don't know.

I'm sure there are much more important things you can do to rank well, such as adding fresh, on-topic content and getting good relevant links.

You either pay in time or money. If the extra money is an important issue for you, use your time to get more links instead.

Thanks for the answer.

But lets assume you register your domain for 10 years and then after 1 year you find you don't want to have your domain at this registrar anymore. When you move the domain to another registrar, they you have paid for 9 years in vain?

I ask that because of the recent thing with godaddy, many people will move their domain away from it. I mean, ok, there's an advantage buying domain for 10 years, but there's a disadvantage of a commitment of doing business with a company for 10 years, and you never know, the company can reveal as bad.
Lets assume someone buys 10 domains for 10 years, that's a lot of money he loses, when he moves all his domains, or?

I understand the point you're making. If you're worried about the value of the investment, don't spend money on it.

As I see it, if you're making good money from a site, buying a 10-year registration for the domain is only a small proportion of your revenue. It's a tiny risk. It's a bit like buying insurance, only much cheaper.

However, if you own 10, 100 or 1,000 sites each making only $100 a year, pouring all your hard-earned revenue into 10-year domain registrations would be a very foolish thing to do - lots of risk for very little, if any, potential gain.
