Hi!
I want to create forum in my website but don't know really what is the best solution? Do I need to buy some software or script? I know that there is free hosted forum providers but I want to host it myself.
I'm not looking for something complicated just to create forum like this.

Thanks

The software which runs this forum was created by http://www.phpbb.com/ . In its basic, unmodified form, it's free. We've made our own modifications.

You have plenty of other options. Whatever option you use, you need to make sure that your forum is search engine friendly - you want the search engines to spider your pages and index them.

Here's a discussion on that:

This forum now more search engine friendly?

Mr. gardyne that, unfortunately is only the second option in a forum "to-have" checklist: the first one is "security". Sad

Phpbb is one of the most hacked forum, so without a careful management it could end of screwed up by "script kiddies".

I would suggest "PunBB", which is less famous, probably less "flashy" than phpbb, but it's targeted toward security.

But, even in this case i would recommend a careful management.
Creating a forum takes no time, managing it is quite more difficult Smile

You also need to consider your programming language that you'll be hooking the forum up to. For example, if you want to integrate your forum into a .NET based website then I'm not sure how the PHP thing would jive. It would be an issue when trying to allow existing users (assuming you allow for accounts) to use the forum without the need to sign-up for the forum seperately. For doing .NET forums I suggest you grab the Community Server app (http://communityserver.org/). I am looking at it now for implementation in a future site and it's pretty slick.

For free forums I really like and recommend simple machines the best.

More security and user priveledges than other free forums.

Check it out if you get a chance.

If you have CPanel installed with your hosting package, you can try installing a few of the Forums included in your Fantastico section.

I think Fantastico has most, if not all the major boards listed.

There are a lot to choose from, so try installing some and seeing how you like them. Check their respective forums for information regarding their security features.
