Post subject: Ebook Software
|
|
|
Hello everyone!
I'm in the midst of finishing up my ebook that I will probably sell through clickbank.
Can anyone recommend a good ebook compiler software?
I've looked at ebookgold, activebook, ebook generator, and ebookedit pro. Can't seem to find out the "negatives" with these though.
My requirements are:
Ease of use - I'm not that technically proficient.
Some security features. Not overly concerned about unauthorized sharing.
Ability to insert hyperlinked affiliate links.
I've read the "review" all over the net, but can't seem to come to a conclusion as to which is best.
Any info you guys can provide is much appreciated.

Hi etj4582,
Those compiler compile ebook in exe format that cannot be viewed by Macintosh user. (A small percentage of total pc user of about 6% as at Oct '06, source from Wikipedia)
And exe ebooks compiled using different compilers may require that particular compiler be downloaded to read it.
There are also a large number of people who fear the idea of downloading a program to install on their pc due to security issues (adwares, spywares and viruses).
Therefore, you must have a pdf version of your ebook as well since AdobeReader comes preinstalled in most pc.
Enjoy!
P.S To find pdf converter, simply do a search at Yahoo for "free pdf converter"
P.P.S Sorry for not offering advice on exe ebook as I'm unfamiliar with it, but I trust ebookpro by IMC the most reliable. _________________ Discover What the Gurus Have Been Hiding From You!

waken makes some very good points. Personally, I would lock it into a pdf file. It's simple, fast, secure, inexpensive...all the things you are looking for.
A real simple pdf program , and it's free, is primopdf.com

I use OpenOffice to create ebooks and special reports. It's just like Microsoft Word except its completely free.
I create the report in the word processer, adding any images and links as I go, and then just click one button to convert it into a pdf. _________________ How to Make a Website

There are a number of free pdf programs. Just be sure the one you want will do everything you want done.
One of the most popular, pdf995 does pdf's just fine.
BUT - no hyperlinks.
So, they have another program that will also do the hyperlinks.
BUT - no locking / passwording
So, they have another program that will do that part.
3 different processes to get it all done.
FREE, but what is your time worth.
I'm told there are some free ones that will do it all, I just haven't found the right one, and I've tried a bunch. Open Office probably does, but I've got the real thing and I'm not going through another learning curve.
I found a copy of Print To PDF at a CompUSA in the $ 9.95 software rack and haven't looked back.
It will do it all, links, watermarks, passwords, encryption, permissions, merge docs, email and html into one finished pdf, etc.
Best $ 10 I ever spent, except that pint of rum with the .... Well, we won't go there. _________________ Dedicated Affiliate Hosting, Help with Pages, Free Templates $ 2 USD per mo.

Hi pete, Thanks for taking the time to make a superb post. It's the sort of post which makes a forum really useful.
We ought to have some sort of system for rewarding really useful posts. I'll have to think about that. _________________ Allan Gardyne

Thanks, you are certainly welcome.
I did a little Googling and found that there is a new version (v6.1) out at $ 49.95.
I bought v5 and can't think of anything that is missing, but they seem to have added more. It's by 602 Software.
As I said, I got the v5 for $ 9.95 and suggest looking for that version, unless you don't mind $ 50, still way less than Adobe and this really does all I'll ever need.
BTW, Allan, earlier this week I won a $ 25 contest on another forum and at the end of last year won $ 100 on another forum that held an article competition.
I don't go to them for the money, in fact they were announced long after I joined. But, i can't knock money for doing what I'd do anyhow.
You know - Money for nothin', Chicks for free! I've certainly been in dire straits in my time, but have yet to run into the chicks for free part.... _________________ Dedicated Affiliate Hosting, Help with Pages, Free Templates $ 2 USD per mo.

Thanks Pete and everyone else for the advice.
Yes the exe thing is a problem so I will probably go with a PDF version. I'm definitely going to look for the PDF to Print software - even if its $50 (big deal), its worth doing right.
Allan, on another forum I am a part of, we do a Member of the Month that the admin and mods choose, these folks get some special privileges for that month. Just an idea. |

Good idea. I'll have to give that some thought.

I LOVE links, if you're answering someone's question helpfully.
I don't like affiliate links in posts, because having them would encourage promotional posts. Also, I'm suspicious of links in a post when it's the only post a forum member has ever made. _________________ Allan Gardyne

If you're looking still looking to sell your eBooks online, you might want to check-out Secure-eBook.
It does have the relative disadvantage of turning your PDF files into Windows executable files.
However, it does wonders with adding protection and facilitating integration with payment processors.
It also is easy to integrate with ClickBank.
You'd still have to build a PDF file, though.
Adobe offers an online service to turn your documents into PDFs. You might want to check it out as well.
Cheers! _________________ --

I have to disagree about your opinion on "exe" files, of course
There is much that can be added in security and functionality through an executable file that just cannot be done through simple scripting of a PDF file.
Both methods have their advantages and their limits. _________________ --

Please feel free to disagree.
Just one question: How do you feel about letting and exe file (a data program) run free on your computer, from an unknown/untrusted source, compared to a dead format that can't harm you (pdf)? _________________ DatabaseDesigner
