Post subject: How long should a web page be?
|
|
|
Hi everyone,
I'm new to the forum, so here goes with my first post.
I've been creating a new web site, but I've got the feeling I'm going overboard with my pages. Trying to fit too much material in a single page.
Is there an optimal length for web pages or articles? At what point do you figure on breaking it up into two (or more!) pages? _________________ Be happy!

Hi Joan and welcome to the board.
Hey! that's a really nice SBI site you have there, had a quick look and I'm definitely going back.
I Know I've seen Ken's answer to the question of page length but can't remember if it's in MYSS, MYCPS or where.
Pretty sure he says it's like "how long is a piece of string". Under 250 words and it will be difficult to get the page indexed, doesn't matter how long except to the extreme. But...
as you are probably aware the longer the page the more difficult it is to keep it tightly focused on one topic.
So I guess as soon as you find yourself writing for another keyword or phrase, then time to start another page.
Hope this helps at least some.
All the best,
Larry Chamberlain.

Hi Joan, this is my first post too!
This is a very good question and unfortunately the standard answer is, it depends.
There is a rule of thumb I've heard from several sources, that 3 screens of vertical scrolling is the maximum for comfortable reading. On the other hand, it can be annoying to have to click and wait for the next page to load in order to continue.
Personally, I think the 3-screen rule is a good one, if only because those looong sales pages have become associated with internet hype and javascript offer expiry dates. If you have a lot of content, divide it into logical categories and link to it to make it easy for your visitors to find what they're looking for. This encourages exploration and is much better than putting everything on the same page, where your visitors are likely to run out of patience before they find what they're after.
With long articles, a method frquently used by sites like webmonkey, for example, is to break them up into coherent sections with subheadings and link to all the sections on the left of the article, plus next and previous pages at top and bottom. If you want to get really sophisticated, you could provide a print-friendly version for those who want to see the whole article on one page.
Hope this helps! _________________ Laurel at minisitetemplates.com |

Hi Larry and Laurel,
Thanks for your replies. They were very helpful! I'll have to go and take another look at Ken's materials.
This leads to another question. What if I break up a page into two different pages, but the focus is only slightly different. Do you ever use the same primary keyword twice?
Seems to me, it wouldn't be too awful to get top listing for two pages with the same primary keyword. But maybe I'm missing something. _________________ Be happy!

Hi Joan,
I would use different keywords because the different keywords or phrases will get you listed eventually on more SE pages.

Joan, it makes sense to me to use the same keyword for different pages if that's what they are about. For example, my SBI site is training-dogs.com, and I am already ranking in the top ten most of the time for that phrase. I am going to do several pages using "dog training" as the keyword to get better rankings with that one. BTW, I read recently that "Google Guy" confirmed that word1_word2 does not create a phrase "word1 word2" where using a dash does. Hence, I have positive-dog-training and other page names where dog training is part of it.
Hope this helps. _________________ Rosana

I hope I've got this right.
Say your keyphrase for one of your pages is " left handed wigets", you write another page optimizing for
" gold plated left handed wigets".
A search for " left handed wigets" would bring up your original page. A search for " gold plated left handed wigets" would bring up the second. If you did not have the second page a search for either term would bring up the original page.
Google does sometimes show two pages from the same domain, but I understand that is the most you would get even if you had a dozen pages optimized for a keyphrase containing " left handed wigets".
I hope I'm not talking complete rubbish. (' ')
All the best,
Larry Chamberlain.

Hi,
I heard "Google Guy" sometimes tells lies. That it just what I heard, take it for what it is.
