Is it best to try and design your own site, particularly the home page or is it best to use a template?

This is actually a quite complex question, that unfortunately only you can answer.
Things to consider....
Do you have any web building experience?
Do you have the time to design a site yourself?
Does your hosting package come with a web building tool?
Does your hosting package come with templates?(most do)
Have you considered Site Build It which has templates and a builder?
If you design your own site, you will gain a ton of knowledge that will help you design more and more pages by yourself.
If you order a template, you will be able to pop it up, an enter in the text, but still will not learn much of the html, or web designing behind your site.

I would highly recommend to use a professional template (not the free one that may have come with your hosting package). There are thousands of sites that sell pre-made high quality templates. Just think how much time it will take you to design your site from scratch especially if you have never done it before...

I think the point is not your own template or not but how your website is professionally looked.
you may look at cwire.org. It used free wordpress template. But, content is king. One of the cwire post got this web into forbes.

Content is kind but you need decent design. Unless your site is pure direct sales (like most IM sites are) you are better off putting a nice logo and nice header or footer.
It doesn't take long to create that kind of site...
As far as professional templates. I'd advice against them. I checked template monster and other sites and trust me those templates are way too busy.
I think there is a site goldenpinecone.com Her owner is Andrea (unless I am mistaken) She used to create James martell templates and templates for affiliate sites.
Her sites were good and professional.

templates can help sometimes but a lot of the time the look so impersonal and cookie cutter.
I guess part of it depends on your niche.
I think you can do fine though using your own templates.
