What is a bandwidth throttle?

How and why is it done?

Does it increase the speed of my site?

Is it available for windows as well as for linux plans?

A bandwidth throttle is usually a module compiled into the web server software to control limits of access to the server. Some modules can limit by speed of various types but not limited too accesses per second, per day, per month and more. Throttling is not very popular as it creates an intense ammount of server proccessing and can kill a server, which is why you do not see it around much. It's mostly used as a selling point to give a safe feeling to customer who has concern on overusage charges.

Bandwidth throttling is typically used by the hosts who offer unlimited or ridiculously high levels of bandwidth. They throttle the bandwidth to reduce their costs and that slows down the delivery of your site to the visitor.

Avoid any host offering mega-disk space with huge amounts of bandwidth.

I'm writing an article about web hosting (myths, truths etc.) which I hope to complete in the next couple of weeks, work allowing, to give you some insight into how hosts work. I'll submit it to the site owner and, if rejected, will post it as a thread.

I'm also looking forward to Charlie puting me right on certain issues Very Happy

PS I don't see any Contact Us link find out how to submit the article...anyone help there?

Some time ago now, I read a quote from a UK businessman (who's name escapes me)...

"If two of us agree, one of us is unnecessary."

Let's just say, I'd hate you to think yourself less "necessary" than the rest of us. Laughing

Cheers,
Charlie.

Nice sentiment, thanks.

Actually I like the cut and thrust of a good debate. This is one of the few forums I have seen where people stick to the facts and don't make disagreements personal which I find counterproductive.

I arrived at this forum due to my involvment with a friend's site which is an e-book reseller site and this is by far the best forum on the subject of affiliates and resellers.

I only stayed after my research was completed because, having benefitted from the posts here, I felt I could contribute to something worthwhile and probably keep on learning.

The forum is a credit to the owners and the members.

You're welcome...

Toes have been trodden on in the past, and humour is not unknown, but all in all I think it works well.

Let's face it, forums tend to bring out the egos in people. There have been some "pretty strong differences of opinion" here too, but things have never degenerated into the sort of abusive slanging matches or slanderous exchanges that are common elsewhere.

And let's face it, as many of us are active while Wally sleeps, half the time we see things in all their uncensored glory.

Actually, at the time of one such heated exchange in which I was keenly participating, I sounded someone out about " me overdoing things" (via a PM). The person in question said "just don't make all your posts bland"...

I try and remember that "advice". Wink

I look at it as mutual stimulation (!) rather than asking and answering. I constantly get ideas from questions people ask (which I thought I knew the answer to).

It's almost enough to make a tear form in the corner of the eye - even an old cynic like me. Wink

Cheers,
Charlie.

Hi better_man,

I work for First Global Hosting, so understand that my response is biased toward the company for which I work. You might do well to check them out.

That being said, read the fine print at any host very carefully, especially if they are offering "unlimited" anything! There is no such thing as unlimited bandwidth. Besides the physical limitations imposed by Internet technology (servers, router and connections), hosts will always have in their "terms of use" a clause that says, "If you exceed expected bandwith (transfer) your site can be shut down, or you will be charge an additional fee." The wording is usually more sophisticated than mine, but means the same thing. I.E., no such thing as a free lunch!!!

OK, now let's look at some other facts. The average web site uses less than 5mb of storage. If a site that size got 10,000 visitors that requested every page on the site, the transfer (bandwidth) would be 6.103515625 gigs. Look at the following calculation:

50000 megabits (5mg X 10,000 visit)
kilobytes 6400000
megabytes 6250
gigabytes 6.103515625

As you see, you can have a lot of activity.

I hope this helped,
Barny
