Before I dipped my toe into the adwords pond or whirlpool I read and read and read before doing anything. Over the past two and half weeks I've managed 1000 clicks over 5 campaigns, 400 and 500 from two of them, and got just one sale. My ads also keep getting disapproved "innacurate display URL" even though I use www.domain.com/produt and the destination URL is the same. I cannot see why cthis happens.
The destination URL redirects to the product site via a hoplink and it seems to me that this method is now a big no no as far as google is concerned.
Altogether I feel cheated and dont know where to go
from here and refuse to chuck any more money away

I understand how you feel. Its a very tricky area and a great opportunity to lose plenty of money. However, SEO, though more or less free- but your time is not- is equally dificult given the huge number of sites aiming for a spot on the first 3 pages of Google.
You say you have read a lot about ppc, but did your reading cover writing good copy? It could be that your web site is not converting.
What are you selling? Are you sure that folk who search on that term are buyers or just looking for free infomation? Check out the other adverts for products such as yours and see how many stay there for more than a week. If the product is not paying you will see the ads quickly disapearing.
Do you have an ezine? If not make a sequence using Aweber or similar service and put the sign up form on your site. Then if people are undecided you give them time to make up their minds and to hear more about your product an d you.
And if you have not read Adword Miracles [URL deleted - Moderator] then I strongly recommend that you get a copy. There is a lot of meat in there written by a successful advertiser.
Don't give up just yet, there is money to be made using PPC but it takes time to learn a successful technique
Hope this helps a bit.

I know how you feel Alashton I did Google Adwords a while back but kept having the same kind of problems you are having and that was even before they changed their rules.
I then decided to try Overture which was just as bad for me because I had spent all day putting my ads up for around 80 keywords and they denied half of them.
Their interface is a little bit more cumbersome to work with then Adwords.
I know many people are having great success with these programs but you really have to know what you are doing. I am sure those who have mastered it probably lost a lot of money before they figured it out.
I guess the question is how much are you willing to spend for learning?
I wanted to try other avenues so I didn't want to spend all of my advertising dollars on Adwords or Overture at the time.
Maybe you might want to try some of the cheaper PPC
until you get your ads and keywords perfected.

First you said the urls are the same and then you said the destination url is a redirect. Well then they are not the same then are they?
I use redirects all the time and make thousands per month doing it. Here is the key and I think it is what you are missing: The displayed url must MATCH the final destination url. So once they click on your ad, the displayed url from the ad must match or be pretty close to the url in the browsers address bar.
You also mentioned a lot of clicks but no sales. That is usally due to poor keyword selection and/or negative keyword selection and sometimes bid price. You are looking for people who are ready to buy the product, not people who are just browsing.
I've dropped bid prices on campaigns to get off the first page of results and I've had my ROI increase dramatically. I had gotten rid of the browsers and found the buyers by doing it. If they had made it to the second or third page of results and were still looking, they tended to be more serious about buying.
And don't forget to either turn off displaying ad on the Content network or to have a much lower Content Network bid price. ROI on the Content network tends to be lower than on the Search network.
Good Luck,

Hi Alashton,
What KirkMcD said about the url is correct. The displayed url must be the url that the final visitor will see when he/she clicks. Try again to see if this fix the error.
But your destination url can be anything. Even a direct http://nickname.abc.hop.clickbank.net is accepted so far by Adwords despite all those rumors that said Google dissapproved that. Why? Because I've been directly linking the hop link without any problem.
Anyway, if you can have a powerful landing page that does the PRE-SELL it's even better.

You should have stop the campaign if the conversion rate is below 5%. That means, out of the first 100 clicks you get, and less than 5 people buy, you should have stop the campaign immediately and do the following:
1) Choose another product. At times, it wasn't your fault but that of the vendor. The sales letter of that particular vendor that you've chosen may not be converting enough. You can read here the tips of choosing a converting page http://netbizsimplified.com/Prerequisite_To_Adwords_PPC_Advertising_Success.html
2) Refine your keywords. Don't bid on general keywords. Use specific keywords.
