Well, I think it should take about half a year to get that, it depends on your skills actually.
Though, there are many ways to promote your website eg.
forums sigs, posts, links directory, link exchange etc.
But the content of your website must be interesting for readers, so that they will recommend it to their friends.
So putting a 'tell a friend' link on your website is a really good idea.
Took, me 6 month, or so to get 300/day, not 500 but still. But it was when I just started out.

Using various methods, surf for traffic exchanges etc., you possibly could bring in 500 untargeted visitors a day, not that they?d be likely to convert into customers. Then, of course, you would have to do the whole thing all over for the next day's 500.
If you have the funds for an advertising budget you could very quickly get 500 targeted visitors a day, that is if you know what you are doing ? otherwise you could very quickly be looking at an empty wallet.
But to reach 500 interested visitors a day from, preferably, the ?free? organic engines will take time (and work.) How much time? Well, as others have suggested, it depends ? pretty much how long is a piece of string?
I think the best thing is to choose your niche well, tell yourself that success isn?t going to come overnight, and concentrate on putting the work in and go for it.

It depends on your webs contents and keywords. If you have great contents and keywords then your site will gain more than 500/day!

Try submiting articles to directories. I got 250 hits to 1 article is 8 days. 22 visits to my site and 1 sale.
Multiply that by 20 articles etc and you got your 500 visits a month free + some income

Write for Wikipedia also! I pasted a link to my site on about 3 pages that had content relevant to the pages on my site. I didn't even write an article, and it boosted my traffic by about 30 visitors + a month. And you can't get much more "targeted" than linking from an encyclopedia.
For those who need a little more help: You need to sign up for an account (it's free). Once you log in, you can edit any page, in any way you'd like. Of course it's reviewed, but since Wiki's material is created by it's visitors, they aren't real picky about what you write.

That?s interesting. Do you mind if I ask did the links stay? If they did I?d say that is unusual, I think most get deleted pretty quick even when relevant.
I once had a link there posted by someone else to point to some information, it only stayed about a month, shame not because it brought a lot of visitors, it didn?t, but a link from Wikipedia is smiled upon by Google.

If you pull out all the stops and generate traffic using these methods, you can achieve your goal...
1. Form joint ventures - partners can generate well in excess of 500 visitors to your site in one day. Partner promotions can vary from 40-50 visitors to well into the hundreds. In any case, you should aim to be constantly finding partners who will promote your site and products. Ideally, you want a mix of one-time promotions but also those who will place longer term promotions such as links, banners or repeat promotion to keep some consistency in your traffic.
2. Keep writing and submitting articles. Each article may only bring in a few visitors each day - but you will find over time some get picked up more widely or end up higher in the search engines bringing you much more traffic.
3. Start a blog - great search engine food and if you submit to the better blog directories, you will get a good deal of traffic - we get over 10,000 visitors each month to the blog alone.

Hi there. I signed up for wikipedia! I edited my page but was wondering how will the SE index it as the pages url is inside a login panel.Or is the page indexed automatically? Just need to be sure.

500 visitors a day? There's really no one way of doing it. But I am not the guy who will spend months just to optimize a site for SEO traffic.
It happens that SE changes their algorithm and filter frequently that normally lead to unpredictable search engine results. And of course your ranking!
Anyway, if you keep up to date to all this SEO stuff, you can maintain your ranking for sure. Okay, instead of showing you how to get >500 visitors a day, here're something you must avoid doing. I call them the time-waster..
1) autosurf - you'll only get hits, not real visitors to your site.
2) safelist mailing - it doesn't work anymore. People joining safelist are more interested in posting offer than to really read their mailbox
3) traffic exchange - it depends on how you use this. If you use traffic exchange site to promote your site directly, it looks like you're missing the key to real traffic from these network:) Don't promote your site first, recruit downlines instead.
But of course, you don't promote traffic swarm at traffic swarm. Swap promote others traffic exchange site like HitMagic etc. Once you've recruited an army of downlines, then only you promote your site.
It's the same formula that Ewen expounded recently at his latest autopilot traffic machine.
