Hi to all

this is my first post here. I have an SBI website and would like to get some opinions on the following matter.

I would like to have a forum on my site. I understand that while I can do that with an SBI site, SEs will not consider the forum part of my site (but a seperate site instead).

My initial thoughts are that one would be better off having a forum on the same site because 1) you build a community, 2) content gets build by users naturally 3) which should be good for your site from a SE standpoint 4) having a forum hosted elsewhere and not considered part of your site defeats the purpose as part of the reason for having a forum is to position your site as an "authority".

My dilema is if I want to pursue having a forum on my site, should I transfer my sbi site to another host instead.

I would appreciate some thoughts especially from those who have sites with forums (both as part of the site and a seperate forum). Does it make any difference? If my goal is to position my site as an authority site with a forum, should the forum be part of my site or should I continue with sbi and have a seperately hosted?

thanks in advance for your inputs.

Nick

You make some good points. Here's an option to consider.

Keep your SBI site going. Start a new site on which you place your forum. Use your traffic-gathering SBI site to lure visitors to your new main site.

My goal, too, is to have an authority site. However, I also have other related sites - PayPerClickSearchEngines.com, LifetimeCommissions.com, KeywordWorkshop.com - which all link to the main site, AssociatePrograms.com, and help it be an authority site.

You can safely link from your related site to your authority site as long as you don't link excessively. I made the mistake a while back of linking excessively with hundreds of links. Yahoo! punished me mercilessly and took ages to forgive me after I removed the excessive links.) Google didn't seem to mind, perhaps because the excessive links were only a small proprtion of the total links to the site - just guessing.

Anyway, the point is that it's GOOD to have related feeder sites linking to your main site. Offline, businesses have smaller, related businesses, so the pattern makes perfect sense online, too.

Hi Nicklian,
I also have SBI site, and I was looking into hosting a forum when I got enough traffic, so I know this for a fact: SBI does not host forums. You have to host your forum at another domain. You've probably already figured this out by now though.

I don't suggest moving the SBI site anywhere. As many many loyal SBIer's will tell you, Sitesell is invaluable.

Hi mlynnsoucy

Yes, I have figured this out and when I posted on the sbi forum, no one actually really replied!.

I have actually moved my site out of sbi because I think it is vital to have the forum as part of your domain. Otherwise, SE will view them as seperate sites.

I want a forum cos I want to build a really good, huge site and have visitors add content for me. Having a forum that sits on a seperate domain where SE do not consider it part of your site just does not makes sense to me.

Thanks for your thoughts.

Nick

I'm not sure exactly what the whole scope is, but Kenny Boy is definitely planning something exciting in this regard.

He has publicly said that all SBIers will become aggregators - which I take to mean all SBIers will have the choice of becoming aggregators. This promises to be a very big development, but I know not the time scale or many more details.

Just a thought,
Charlie.

Charlie

are you refering to web 2.0?

perhaps that is the case, but my personal opinion is that I want my forums to be on the same domain and not seperate. Hence, the decision.

I think what I mean is Content 2.0, but I have a job keeping up with all those made up terms, too. Smile

Cheers,
Charlie.

Hi

Content 2.0 will allow visitors to your site to add contents related to whatever it is your site is about.
