Hi all,

This is my first posting. First, I'd like to say kudos to everyone for excellent topics and replies.

My question is this. I'm in the process of designing a website for a friend of mine who wants to sell jewelry boxes that he designs and handcrafts himself. And so it will have the ability of allowing visitors to purchase his items directly from the site, via a paypal shopping cart system. So every sale will earn me a commission (I guess that makes me an informal affiliate for his products).

It's a pretty straight forward direct marketing e-commerce site -- find the category of jewelry box you want to buy, click on the shopping cart button and pay for your item.

But my question is this -- do you think I would benefit from higher traffic and sales from this website, if I converted this into an affiliate-type website?

Such as adding content rich articles, links to complementary products (like jewelry websites, obviously), and all the other tips/tricks to affiliate marketing.

I'm already familiar with affiliate marketing as I had previously designed an affiliate website for a portable mp3 player (the publisher, unfortunately no longer has an active affiliate program), which I promoted through the Findwhat.com ppc search engine.

It got me to thinking maybe it wouldn't hurt if I added other content besides just trying to sell the actual jewelry boxes.

Comments/suggestions much appreciated.
Thanks in advance,
gameboy72

Content never hurts and with the flux in SE's it's a basic that lives on with rankings all over the place. I would recommend content very highly, whether you do it as an affiliate site or a direct sale site.

Why not download the SBI! guide. At the end of the day, it all depends on reseraching your niche - certainly the demand.

I would try both the PPCs (as you have experience) and the content site approach.

Also, I'd mention the idea of an affiliate program to your friend, if there is scope for decent commissions. A decent affiliate program can spread the word fast, as much as result in sales directly. Weigh up whether it's worth going public or just approaching a few super affiliates.

Hope this helps,
Charlie.

Hi Gameboy72,

As both Debs and Charlie say what harm can content do you?

If your site had no content it would be a catalog with an order page and perhaps a sales letter, then who's going to find you?

With 20, 30, 40, 100 or so articles each focused on a different keyword, you'd have all those avenues for potential customers to be enticed to your order page....

....and for free Smile

All the best,
Larry Chamberlain.
