Ah, what a refreshing change from affiliate programs...
My old French dictionary used to say "sorte de jeu de billards", but for the rest of the "desperately ignorant world", it's a game similar to pool, but played on a bigger table, by men with more balls.
Well, you did ask.
(I started to explain it in more detail, but found myself worrying about the jargon. Try Google.)
It's traditionally played in countries that were still part of the British Empire in the nineteenth century - now you know what you were missing - but is also very popular in China, Thailand and Holland, amongst other places.
Rumour has it that it was devised by a British army officer in India, who grew tired of billiards - a much older game of medieaval origin.
They don't call it "Great" Britain for nothing, you know.
All the best,
Charlie. _________________ "Before I speak, I have something important to say."

It's much easier, too.
Horses for courses - from my experience, snooker is hard, pool is fun. Guess it all depends how masaochistic you're feeling...
You can just "have a go" at pool, but snooker requires a much more serious approach to get any results at all. As a beginner, it can seem extremely frustating - even "potting" is much harder than in pool.
Interestingly, some years ago, the snooker legend Steve Davis competed against an American pool champion at various different types of pool (several of which SD had never even played before) and also snooker. SD was obviously at a tactical disadvantage with the pool games, but he won several, whereas the pool champ. struggled with the distances and heavier balls of snooker. (Snooker is arguably much more tactical, but it never got to that stage.)
Another phenomenon is the alcohol test - pool gets easier with drink (up to a point), snooker gets harder. Believe me, I've researched this.
Cheers,
Charlie. _________________ "Before I speak, I have something important to say."
