I would add to your list finding products that met the needs or wants of the people on your list. If you have a list with mostly college students then look for products that would appeal to them, ie "Scholarship/Grant guides" or "pizza coupons" or "term paper writing for dummies".
The more you know about the people on your list, the easier this will be. _________________ 100,000 FREE Ebooks - No Email Required!

Free content should be quality content. Nobody needs junk.
I agree subject lines are important. I am jaded, it takes a good subject to get me to open the email.
I would add that using an autoresponder is a great way to build a relationship. Include a multi part guide to something that gets delivered over several days or weeks (make sure you tell them they will be getting the guide when they sign up. Don't want to make anyone angry). This will intoduce you to them and keep you in their memory.
So often I will sign up for something but not remember 2 hours later. The repeat exposure with good information will make you a friend to them. _________________ Dave

Go test out a lot of products that fit in the niche, and when you find one you love, tell them about it, and they will "feel" your excitemnt for it.
To get the to read your emails, you just have to use "eye stopping" phrases. Thing that really touch on "hot spots" Like for the IM crowd, things like:
