I am creating a new site where a major portion of the content will be republishing articles. I was researching this strategy and found several references as how this could penalize my site.

Is this true? I am concerned that the reprinted articles will not get indexed in the SE's

If so, can I avoid the penalty by either; adding an introduction paragraph about the article or include am article summary page and then link to the actual articles?

Lots of people will probably disagree with me on this, but here's how I see it...

Because you're planning a serious business, you need to look a few years down the track and try to imagine what the Internet is going to be like.

Right now, an incredible number of auto-generated blogs and made-for-AdSense websites are pouring on to the Net in an ever-increasing flood.

As China, India, Indonesia, Malaysia, and all the other countries decide to get involved more, the flood of new websites will become a raging torrent.

Now imagine yourself in a room of search engine engineers, who all have PhDs. What's one of their favorite topics going to be? It's exactly the same topic they've discussed since search engines began: "How do we sift out the best websites from the junk?"

One way is to check for duplicate content and relegate similar pages to Google's supplementary index. That's happening now.

(I know, I know, you don't need to tell me that lots of websites publish duplicate content and get away with it. Remember, we're looking ahead, not at what's happening today. Filters will improve. You can guarantee it.)

A second step might be to identify pages which are mainly duplicates.

A third step might be to be utterly ruthless and block suspect sites from even getting into the index. Some innocent or borderline sites would probably be blocked as well.

Today, adding fresh commentary top and bottom (and perhaps also a text add in the middle) works well on some sites.

If you decide to use this technique, the gamble you're taking is whether the technique will continue to work for 10 years, five years, six months, or one month.

Based on past performance, search engines tend to be a bit slow to react, so my rough GUESS is that you might manage to get one or two years more out of this technique.

As I said in my newsletter the other day, Google has updated its webmaster guidelines advising us to publish "unique and relevant" content on our sites. Your best bet is to create a business plan which takes this advice into account.

For long-term success, don't build a borderline business. You already have doubts about your plan. Listen to what your instincts are telling you.

Allen,

Interesting perspective and thanks,

I might need to go back to the drawing board and rethink my strategy.

I agree with the longterm vision. I'd like to go that route also. But as i stand right now I'm just getting started, I'd like to get my feet wet, test, see what works best for me.

Problem is...

I don't have much money or time to invest. That's why I wanted to use free articles myself to get a start. I wanted to hit niches with content driven sites, see how they work out, get some income generated, test ideas. Then use this as a foundation for a more permanent residence.

As I see it, getting that quick launch at first could teach me alot of things that i could use as a focus point in the long run. Making mistakes, happening upon new techniques, etc.

I like reading ebooks about marketing but in my case it takes jumping in and experiencing it first hand, just like any job at first you have no idea what to do. But I don't have the income to test tons of ideas with.

Do you think Allan that getting that fast start is pointless even if you have longterm goals in mind that didn't necessarily have anything to do with those quick projects? I know that aiming for the quick buck is termed as scamming, unethical approaches.

Not that Ken Evoy was a scammer by any means but even he did not write his own ebooks at first. Plus reading reviews about internet marketers you'll almost always find gripes about even the best of the bunch ripping people off on something or another.

I've been using reprint articles with introductions & some text at the end without any problem. I'm not sure if you should make the bulk of your site from duplicate content, but it seems to work OK to add more pages to my existing sites.

I understand Allan's point about thinking long-term and agree that your ultimate goal should be original content. In the meantime, though, you could put the site out there to get started and then gradually replace the reprints with your own articles.

It IS good to take action. Some people research and analyze stuff for a year or two without actually doing anything.

However, to me it's just plain common sense to look ahead and imagine what things might be like in five years time. If you can see the writing on the wall now, why not build a site which has a good chance of lasting for five years or more? Why build a straw house which might get blown down in the next gale when you have the option of building a brick house?

Even if that's true, it's totally irrelevant. You're planning a website not an ebook. A website which will compete for attention in the search engines with other websites - and which needs to get good links from other related sites.

I think your first project should be a site you strongly believe will succeed - your best idea. You can always experiment with more innovative ideas later on when you have some decent money coming in.
