I have been doing Internet marketing for 7 years now. Although I am by no means an 'expert', this is what has worked for me.
I have read over and over (and over)
"The fortune is in the followup"
I have found this one thing to be the difference for me. Autoresponders or some type of systematic followup will reap new customers. I follow up until they either sign up or opt out!
I have also read over and over (and over)
"Your list is your goldmine"
I have also found this to be true. If you have or can generate your OWN list, they will follow you. People are looking for good content. If you can provide a good newsletter, ezine, blog, etc with great content and a freebie here or there, you can build a quality list.
These are some simple (but powerful) ideas that has worked for me.

true, but you could also create a blog, an singup for bloglet service. It works for me.

Heidi - there are many different autoresponders you can use. Some are free - some you have to pay for. Maybe you will want to start with a free one. I use www.aweber.com. It is about $20 per month - but you can use it for multiple sites. I am lucky, as my mother has an account, and i can use it for my site.

If you get stuck with the autoresponder - let me know. I struggled with it at first, but it gets easier.

I too have been been looking for information on autoresponders. I have outlined some of my finding on my blog "Market Associate Time" under Case Study E-mail Marketing Part II. I highlighted aweber and also a more advanced autoresponder. You may find it interesting.
