I don't know if you've read Allan's latest yet, but how about the piece on unique articles for free...

http://www.1st-4-articles.com/

Actually, I can't help but wonder whether the small number of high quality links generated by the promotion will prove to be a more practical benefit than the back links from the articles, but that's another story...

Back with this one...

Regarding the smoke and mirrors they call "duplicate content penalties", there was a recent piece in the post from Ralph Wilson (though his photo's changed a bit)...

http://www.wilsonweb.com/art/promote/content-spamming.htm

Not exactly conventional wisdom.

Hope it's of interest,
Charlie.

From the article:

Quote:
It all comes down to intent.

Seriously, most people, let alone a search engine, can't judge the intent of anything.

I've always been in the camp that duplicate content generally won't get you banned. The worse that can happen is you won't get much traffic because your version of the duplication is filtered out.

And it shows.

Yes, penalty rather than ban, but still a bloody nuisance... especially when your original isn't picked up. It can happen.

For me, content sites and SEO all boils down to following a few basic rules and just hoping your good intentions aren't misinterpreted. Agonising over the whys and wherefors is just a waste of time for most of us.

If you are the sort of person who loves to analyse (God help you), you're better off sticking to direct marketing, before your head spins off somewhere undesirable.

I'm not meaning content isn't the way to go for many, just that it's best to follow the road rather than study the map to death.

To be honest, that original guest piece from Ralph's source didn't hit the mark for me at all. Perhaps I was looking for too much.

Cheers,
Charlie.

P.S. Robert, I just took a look at your Allan G interview. Good stuff - I'm a great fan of "exclusives".

One thing though - for anyone still looking, it's buried deep in the Dec 2005 archive. If I wasn't such a stubborn blighter I might never have found it. Why not a direct link in the sig?

Thanks for that. If I remember right, my signature file here wouldn't permit that many characters to put the full URL in there. I may trim my signature down to fit it in there (don't hold me to it, though!)
