Overture pools search terms due to MatchDriver and gives results independent of case and whether or not they are singular or plural. Also, misspellings are usually grouped with the correct version.
Wordtracker keeps all these terms separate.
Having said that, these factors do not explain the degree of difference in all cases. Remember this is software - read "imperfect algorithm". Always get a second opinion (from Wordtracker) if you are using Overture or SBI! (which is based on it).
Remember also, that Wordtracker uses webcrawlers as a source, Overture uses it's own search results. These tools are relative indicators more than anything else.

Wrong. The free version only uses results from Alta Vista, and the occurance of those keywords on Alta Vista. It may use the same list of keywords for every search engine it queries, but the supply is relevent to the search engine being queried. In the free version, that is Alta Vista. |

6. Finding your Niche
Find those niches in the search engines - the most popular keywords with the least number of competing web pages.
The full database allows you to find niches on most of the major engines, including Altavista, Lycos, Google, Infoseek, MSN, Yahoo, Goto etc..
The free trial allows you to find your niche in Altavista only.
This is from the Wordtracker page. |

Wrong again.
Headings explained:
Count shows the number of times a particular keyword has appeared in our database. E.g. Our database currently holds 30 million words. A count of 147 tells us that this particular word has appeared 147 times out of 30 million.
24Hrs is the maximum total predicted traffic for just this major search engines and is based on the current 24 hour period.
Using our "stuffed animals" example count is 1451 and 24Hrs is 27
Since this is the free version it is using results from ALTA VISTA ONLY!!! |

Considering how cheap Wordtracker is to use on just an occasional basis, I'm surprised anybody much restricts themselves to the free version anyway.
They keep your data for quite a while (is it 3 months?) before it is deleted, and surely one day a month wouldn't be too expensive for even occasional users. Well worth it, for the full version, I reckon.
Cheers,

Absolutely, one day a month is like $6 or $7 US, do any research at all and it's well worth the investment.

Hi everyone.
I've been busy for the last couple of days and have not had a chance to post. Once again, I really do appreciate all of the great feed back - positive and negative. Which, to me, the negative is also positive. At least now I know what I need to work on.
Yaron, thank you for bringing some things to light that I need to know.
Actually, I have been confused about the keyword situation on Overture and Wordtracker. I have used both. Overture more than Wordtracker. But my decision to use the keywords for my website was based upon the SBI Site Manager keyword analyses. I had looked at lots of other keywords that were of interest to me, but there were just too many competing sites. For instance, I was very interested in Travel or a small niche area of Travel. But even the small parts (beach vacation, spa vacation, etc...) of it seemed to be very competitive. Therefore, I let that idea go.
Thanks again, not only for the wonderful feedback but the great information that I have received from each of you. I now know not to rely on just one keyword analyzer software, but to use others and compare the results before making decisions.

I'm not wrong. You're quoting me and very quick to say I'm wrong, but then you're arguing against things I didn't say.
Your explanation of what the 24Hrs heading means is very nice, but it doesn't show I'm wrong because I never used or mentioned the numbers in the 24Hrs heading in my previous posts. I used the count.
Therefore let me clarify:
The count is the same for both the free and paid versions, and it is the count that's roughly the same as all the searches for that keyword in a day.
Quoting Wordtracker technical support:
"No, there's not a difference in the keyword counts between the trial and full version of Wordtracker."
And if you don't believe me that the count is ROUGHLY (somewhat more than) the daily searches for a keyword in all search engines, lookup what the Predicted column means under the Keyword Database section of the Wordtracker manual (section 3.2) and compare the Count column to the Predicted column.

Charlie,
It's nice to be talking to someone with a name.
I get a one day subscription (which, BTW, I found to last more than one day) for my main research, and then use the free version later if I think of a few other keywords I might have missed.
Regards,

Millie, I would love to hear how you're doing with traffic to your pages so that we'll be able to tell which is closer to reality in this situation, Wordtracker which says your keywords are not so good, or Overture which says your keywords are great.
Regards,

Sorry about that, the last post is by me. It was a failed attempt to edit while not noticing that I'm logged out. Please disregard.

To get back to the original subject of this thread, my personal feeling is that I wouldn't launch a site with less than 10 pages with good interesting and useful content. I would then not feel comfortable until I had about 20 good pages. After about 20 pages, I'd feel more confident in adding some pages of lesser quality just to bring traffic in. But this of course all depends on the site's topic, how good your keywords are and how much search engine traffic you expect as a result, and what other methods of getting traffic are you planning to use.

Yaron,
I can vouch for Guest in saying that the free and paid version of wordtracker yields the same search results for demand - it will vary for supply because the number of sites in alta are vastly different from google and the other SEs. In my experience, Overture has grossly inflated figures. I do advertise on Overture and the figures I get for impressions for keywords they have quoted me are way below expectations.
Millie,
I would add a few pictures on the site too - if I'm visiting a content site for information, I would be looking to get content and would be quite happy to read lines and lines of text. But if I am looking to buy something like stuffed toys or animal art or something like that, I would be looking for some pictures to entice me to click. With your home page, move the links below to above the crease so that visitors don't have to scroll down to see any more.
As an offside - Animal Den is with Ebates I believe and Ebates is parasiteware - they've been known to steal affiliate commissions before. Just watch Anita Lang, they have a habit of not being up to date when paying the people who manage their affiliate program, there was a week where all my links got redirected to an error page, so I pulled their links. You also need to build some links into the site - get some link exchanges going or list yourself in some directories.
Good luck
