Is "blogging" a good way for a newbie to start making money on the web?
asortus, in my personal and humble opinion, if you were a close friend / family member, honestly asking for help, I would suggest you jump on the blogging bandwagon, instead of the traditional html site building route.

Why?

Speed, Ease, Convenience
Because you can get a blog up and running in short order, anywhere from 15 minutes to an hour/two, and without having to fuss with too much design layout and pages, like a traditional site.

Freedom
Plus, when you blog, and if you're on the road, away from your site building tools like Dreamweaver, you simply login to your blog (online), and post your thoughts, then publish it. Voila!

Results + Effectiveness
A blog will get spidered anywhere from the same day to the same week, unlike the 1-3 months for a traditional site.

Functionality
Your blog can use modules of code, called Plugins, if you're using Wordpress, and adds super-functionality to your blog from just a simple plugin activation. To do that on a traditional site takes a lot more elbow grease and time.

For those reasons above, I would suggest blogging over traditional site building. Of course, I'm biased towards Wordpress, as when you install the blog scripts to your host, the files and your posts are yours. When you use Blogger, or MovableType/TypePad, you're at the mercy of Google, or paying a fee to SixApart. I prefer to have the control and freedom.

To see a video I created for my subscribers on how I chose Wordpress over the others, showcasing a grid and checklist, have a look here:

Enjoy!

I am trying WordPress for creating blogs on one of my new sites. I found the tool satisfactory as it is free - though it seems to have some bugs - I often get errors when I try to modify any posts.
Wordpress is my choice for a blog platform. You can create the blog as a sub-directory of your main site, or use the blog as the entire site. Here are some examples:

The two domains in my sig file showcase sub-domains of my main blog/site.

It's always easier to customize a blog to look like your website, rather than squeezing a blog into an existing website.

With the theme I use, its simple to drop in a header image, and customize background colors, and other creative elements.

Hope that helps.

if you can get a copy of RSS announcer, this will save a lot of time because it will submit your blog to around 50 top blog directories. Other free resources would be:

http://www.feedburner.com - burns your blog feed and makes it easy for others to subscribe.

http://www.pingomatic.com - pings about 10 top blog directories.
