It's time to read the Message Board Use Instructions for the guidelines for presenting messages.
You also need just one topic per message - makes it easier for people to respond. There is a Site Review section if that's what you want.

Hi Allan or anyone in-the-know,
I read your article at http://www.associateprograms.com/search/newsletter205.shtml, but it is from three years ago. I know a lot has happened since then.
There are so many link cloakers out there. Are ClickBankGuard and Affiliate Link Cloaker as good as they were in 2002 or are they obsolete at this point? What about the new ones that have come out since then? Any recommendations? Does anyone use Link Shield?
I know no system is foolproof, but I want to purchase one that is relatively "safe" ... protects my links from theft most of the time from those except the worst link thief.
I use SBI for the site I am thinking about, so I don't have access to the .htaccess file.
I can't believe after all these years, CB still hasn't done something to make this situation better for its affiliates.
Any help is most appreciated.

i am too busy to try and figure out how to use .htaccess files. None the less great to know. I found this great service called safeclick that i use. If anyone is interested i find it really easy. Which is good for me because i can barely operate a computer. But it helps me make more money.

If you used the safeclick system, it looks to me as though you'd be sending all your traffic to the safeclick site. If that server was ever down or if the company went out of business, all the affiliate links on your site would stop working. What a disaster that would be.
In contrast, if you use .htaccess redirects - free - if there's a problem with one affiliate merchant you can make ONE simple change in one file to fix dozens or even hundreds of links on your site.

That is a good observation, and one that i haven't though of before. I have used safeclick, and haven't had any issues so far. I did contact them once, and got user support really fast.
I exported all of my links from safeclick, it has the option for that just in case. I think i will do this on a more regular basis for backup purposes.

This solution requires some coding, not a lot: Add each link to a database table. The database provides a unique number for each link. When some clicks on a link they go to a small portal page that looks up the real link and jumps off.

If I'm not mistaken, doesn't Google expressly forbid cloaking in their Terms of Service? They explain that this is reason to remove a webpage from all PR.
I'm pretty sure I read that... so... as I know this site would never recommend anything to get you banned from google... can you please explain HOW this is different?
Also, if someone could briefly describe the concept of why you would want to cloak or redirect or whatever, it would be appreciated.

If this is wrong, someone please correct me... My understanding of Google's Terms is that it applies to their search engine spider that is crawling your site and that only your site is not allowed to be cloaked.

The topic is about disguising the affiliate hyperlink that you receive from an affiliate so that people are not aware that it is a link to another site.

These are a two of the popular reasons:
1. You have an extra long link to a book on Amazon called "Make More Money Yesterday that you are recommending to your customers and you want to make it easy for them to go there. So you create a link with the the following reference: www.yoursite.com/MakeMunny.htm. Now when they go to that page, they are automatically sent to the correct page on Amazon.
2. Similarly if you are an affiliate on some affiliate program or other and you are asking the visitor to go to clickbank and buy the product so that you can get your commision, your affiliate link could look something like this: http://hop.skip.jump.MakeMoreMoney.cluckbonk.com/?aff=1403&pdt=MakeMoreMunny and some little shyster who knows the trick to all this knows that if he just types http://MakeMoreMoney.cluckbonk.com in his browser he can go and buy the product directly and you lose the commission...

Just a bit more detail...
Website cloaking shows one page to human visitors and a different page to the search engine. It's often used to hide search engine spam.
