Hi everyone!
I need a little help...
I recently placed a banner advertisement on a site and, starting with the next day, I had a huge traffic increase. WOW - I said, at first. But as the UNIQUE visitors were not converting into sales, I started wondering... And I soon discovered that the top reffering IPs were banned as spam (a simple WHOIS showed me that...).
Now, my question is (I hope it doesn't sound stupid): how does this happen? I mean, is the other site hit by spammers and it somehow reflects to me through the banner? I'm pretty sure that the webmaster is not messing around, he seemed like a straightforward guy (I hope I'm not mistaking...) and the website is a respected community site.
Can anyone explain?
IF the webmaster is doing stuff to direct false visitors to my site, how does he do it and how can I prove it? More importantly, how can I stop it without blocking REAL visitors coming from that site?

It's possible to buy software which sends fake visitors to websites. I don't know how you'd prove it's being done, but do you really need to spend time trying? If the traffic doesn't convert into sales, then it's a poor investment and you won't want to continue it. _________________ Allan Gardyne

Like Allan said, I would consider it a lesson learned and move on. However, if you can dig into your server logs easily, it should be easy to distinguish traffic that is all coming from the same or similar IP addresses. In addition, you can see if visitors are visiting multiple pages, or they are simply visiting one page than leaving.
However, it's harder to prove where exactly it came from. It could merely be people coming to your site and leaving quickly. The key is to find the major derivations from your traditional traffic patterns. _________________ Robert

How do you pay a banner? Is it pay per click or CPM ? If its pay per click i think the webmaster is doing stuff.
Neither. I paid a fixed sum for 1 month of banner display.
I already have statistics for the website that show me where visitors come from - that was my main concern, the top 5 referring IPs showed up as SPAM when I looked them up (WHOIS). I have some doubts that the webmaster is messing around, so I was wondering if somehow the spamming IPs were hitting his site and somehow "reflecting" to my site throught the banner... _________________ Prepaid calling cards Make money online with our affiliate program - checks paid anywhere in the world!
