Optimal screen widths and how to use the space are among the hottest debated topics in Websiteville. Wink Using a screen width of 1024 would, by definition, fill the screen of anyone who uses that resolution -- or more accurately, it would fill the screen and then overhang it by the width of the right-hand scrollbar and browser window edges.

Here are some numbers I found that can help you determine the available area within a browser window for each resolution:

640x480 Maximized = 600x300
800x600 Maximized = 760x420 (This is the one that I use)
832x624 Maximized = 795x470
1024x768 Maximized = 955x600

However, you might want to consider using 800x600 as a rule of thumb, combined with flexible column widths or flexible screen width (using percentages rather than a fixed size). There is still a very large percentage of users who have their monitors set to a lower resolution -- not because they have out of date equipment, but because they find it easier to read the screen that way (especially with so many sites using microscopic fonts these days). If you design for 1024 then you force these viewers to scroll to the right to view the rest of your webpage, which most people find annoying.

As far as column sizing, much depends on what you plan to put in the columns and how you plan to use the divided space. I suspect a standard percentages for 3 columns are 25-50-25% of the screen, but I'm guessing. My suggestion is to test it and see what looks best.

Hope that helps!
