Post subject: Too much e-mail from someone you like

Hi All,
I happily subscribe to the newsletters of several web gurus, and most are considerate enough to only send out e-mails once a week or less.
However, I have a couple who send out e-mails 4-5 times in a 10-day period. Not only is it irritating to get so much mail from them, but this mail is frequently just ads for their latest e-book, course etc.
I don't want to unsubscribe because I am sometimes interested in the subject matter of their e-mails, but am tired of sorting through repeated e-mails that often say the same thing.
Is it reasonable to ask that e-mail marketers maintain a list of people who don't want to receive mail more than once a week? Or should I just unsubscribe and drop a note as to why I've unsubscribed?

That sounds very annoying to me, I hear ya! I subscribed to Alans newsletter but I have yet to recieve it in my email, I had to read it from the archive. As far as I can tell, Alan seems to do a good job of spacing his newsletters apart.

If the value of the overall information outweighs the annoyance of the frequency of the emails, just use the delete button on the ones you don't want. If the value of the overall information does not outweigh the annoyance of the frequency of the emails, unsubscribe. Only you can determine this for yourself.

I agree with Jim and, like you, have several newsletters that I like and am willing to tolerate their ads for the sake of the newsletter itself.
However, I think it's less annoying if they incorporate the two-- as SEO News usually does (though they send solo ads, as well). There are ads within the newsletter, which I can view or not. And sometimes the ad IS for something I'm interested in. But, either way, I know opening the newsletter will benefit me.

Thanks for the feedback, everyone. I know there's always the unsubscribe option or the delete button. I'd just like to provide the relevant parties with some constructive feedback rather than swing to one extreme or the other anonymously. I'm not sure I'd want to receive 3-4 e-mails a week from a close family member or friend.
Right now, all I can do is unsubscribe or tolerate many mass e-mails per week from a party I'm only interested in hearing from occassionally.
I wish there was a 3rd-option - subscribe me, but don't send more than 1 e-mail per week. That way, I might actually read what you've sent 50% of the time.
Perhaps I'll suggest that to the e-mailers in question. |
