Try to get into Open Directory

Get other pages, with content related to yours , with PR4 (page rank) or more to link to you.

To get into Google / Yahoo you have to have somebody link to you

You don't have to be linked to be included in Google, or Yahoo. But it certainly helps the ranking you get in the results.

For now, Google results are shown in Yahoo search results. No telling how long that will last since Yahoo now owns Inktomi.

You should get listed in Inktomi for sure, for future inclusion in Yahoo results (if Yahoo goes that way and why buy Inktomi if they don't?). It would also be good now since MSN uses Inktomi results, at least until next year or so. (MSN is doing their own spider thing which is supposed to be live sometime next year or so)

Google submission is free. You can also submit to Inktomi for free. No guarantees on spidering or listing however.

That is new to me. I have not read the goodle directions for a while, but I am pretty sure they said you needed to be linked to so the spider would find you... Maybe this has changed.

Debs, have you seen any signs of Yahoo using Inktomi ?

I went into a panic when they bought it because I rank pretty good in google, but haven't had time to pay much attention to Inktomi.

For months now I havn't seen anything from Inktomi in Yahoo. They use some other sources than Google, but I don't think it is from Inktomi.

The results in Google are also more revelant, so Inktomi would have to change their search strategy if Yahoo is going to use them.

Debs is definitely right on this one.

Google might prefer to find your site themselves via a link, but it certainly isn't necessary.

I have several one page sites with no incoming links whatsoever which have been indexed and appear in Google's listings. Interestingly, in two cases, I didn't even submit them manually either, but Google's spider still found them. These have high rankings on very specialised searches, but it shows the possibility of getting into Google without links.

All the best,
Charlie.

Thanks for pointing this out...

Charlie, two questions, if you have the time:

1. How long did it take you to get listed this way ?

2. Do those one pages sites rank if there are any competition, maybe sites with PR1-2 ? I have found that usually I need a least 5 pages site to rank for real.

I think the general consensus is that the algo of Inktomi is undergoing revision and so won't be Yahoo's default SE just yet. It will be interesting to see what happens when the change finally comes.

Hello again.

1. Not sure how long it took, since I wasn't expecting (or particularly wanting) them in the SEs in the first place. I only discovered it later, by chance. Somewhere between one day and two months.

2. There wasn't much competition. Maybe a few hundred sites in one case, as the searches were very specific (with quotes). One of my one page sites ranked number one on that specific search. This was from good, basic on-page factors.

I think the point to remember here, is there's a big difference between being indexed amd getting good rankings. If you have any serious competition for any given search phrase, you may get indexed without external incoming links, but you certainly don't rank very highly.

I was trying to demonstrate that you don't actually need links. In practise, you won't get very far with Google without them. Smile

Hope this helps,
Charlie.

Sure I got your point, I just got carried away from this new realization. I love learning new things. Very Happy

So MrKey, I stand corrected, you can get indexed in Google/Yahoo without any links, it just won't do you any good except you get good links.

And getting good links is actually the quickest free way to get into any search engine.
