Does anyone know if they are any restrictions regarding the appearance of alternate ads? I couldn't find much in Google's FAQ/Rules pages...

For example, I was thinking of having alternate ads that promote different areas of my site. However, I want to keep the "look and feel" consistant, so I was wanting to have my alternate ads in the same format as "Ads by Google" (colors, layout etc), but instead clearly labeled with my site name so there is no confusion regarding what is what. The idea is that my alternate ads will still be non-profit, but will at least keep visitors on my site.

Man, these guys are fast! Not more than a half hour after sending my inquiry, I got this message:

"Our intent with this policy is to be as fair to our advertisers as
possible and to maintain the integrity of the AdWords and AdSense
programs. This means limiting the other types of ads that AdSense
publishers display along with our ads. "

"To be more specific, we do not permit AdWords ads to be published on web
pages that also contain what could be considered competing ads. This would
include all content-targeted ads as well as text-based ads. However, the
text-based ads are a bit more difficult to define. We do allow affiliate
or limited-text links, but we do not allow text-based ads that either
directly mimic or attempt to be associated with AdWords ads."

Might be of interest to you guys.
Google rocks.

Yes, they're quick to reply, but if I understood your question correctly, not much on target this time.

Google does not allow AdSense-like ads on pages that contain their ads. But by definition alternate ads appear on pages without AdSense ads.
