Hi brothers and sisters, Smile

Is it wise to have a reciprocal link with a site which has a low traffic rank (over 2 million) but a page rank of 5? Especially if the site appears to have been around since 2001.

Secondly, could someone explain to me why a site could have a page rank of 5 and still have a low traffic rank?

Thanks,

Mantius,
from the sunny caribbean island of Saint Lucia. Cool So nice and warm today. What I'm I saying? It's always like that! Very Happy

Hi Mantius,
If the site is related to yours, go ahead. If you are refering to alexa rank, i wouldn't worry about it. It is usually dependent on the topic of the site and is not always reliable, but that may be the only type of indicator available.
Don't go by traffic rank from alexa. We may actually not know the site traffic unless the webmaster tells us. And just because a page has pr5 dosen't make it rank high. It also depends on the pr of competing pages.
I hope you undertand what i write, i am half asleep now. Smile

To your success,
Gana.

I agree with Gana. If you are talking Alexa traffic rank, then you have to remember that only sites viewed by people who have the Alexa toolbar installed are ranked by Alexa. The site you viewed may have a low incidence of viewers who have the toolbar installed.

Alexa rankings are pretty much meaningless. I suspect Alexa was created as a marketing tool for SBI since they seem to put so much emphasis on it.

And the usage of the Alexa toolbar is quite different around the world.
It is much used in Asia and in the US, whereas regular european sites don't get such high rankings because of lower number of installed toolbars.

Anyway, its a good tool to check out the competition

I believe Alexa has been around quite a bit longer than SBI, but I could be wrong Smile

Yes, if your site has a low PageRank and few outgoing links.

As far as I understand it, traffic levels do not have any influence on the PageRank Google assigns, but the other way around... A high PageRank site will probably (but not necessarily) rank highly in Google listings, and hence attract good traffic.

Some search engines also used to afford bonus points to older sites. Not sure if this comes into effect with PageRank.

Sean Burns tries to lead us all carefully through the PageRank "misinformation minefield" in other threads, if you do a search.

Hope this helps,
Charlie.

Hi there,

Thanks for all the info.

This SBI thing is really taking all my attention. It's been almost 8 weeks now since I started, and I've built 29 pages.

I love SBI anyway. Although I know it will be a while before things really materialize and kick off.

I'm being patient because I know that page rank, traffic rank, and so on, might take quite a while before I see anything worth being happy about.

Gary, perhaps one day I can have a number of sites like you. Very Happy

Later, everybody,

Mantius.

I am not feeling patient! I am so frustrated by lack of Google ranking. All my pages are optimised using the SBI analyse page tool. Not all my pages have been found yet but the ones that have are not in the top 30.
So I am not getting visitors-only about 30 to 50 a day. Alexa has ranked me at 160,000 so I can't imagine how that happened unless all my visitors have the tool bar.

I really don't know what more I can do and I feel like quitting-but I keep remembering that I once read that 95% of businesses quit just as they are on the brink of success!! Confused

Mantius,

I'm the last person to give advice on the PR issue... I agree with Charlie... Sean is our PR master and guide in that area. But I'll add my 2 cents.

Since you're getting started I would recommend that you come up with a policy on PR and who you link to... and stick with it. If they don't have a PR of X don't trade links.

Since PR bleeds, if someone with a high PR and has 100 links they bleed off that PR equally to others. There comes a point that your link partner doesn't do much good if that have a large quantity of links.

The way I understand PR it is exponential

PR 1 = 1
PR 2 = 10
PR 3 = 100
PR 4 = 1000
PR 5 = 10000

These are just numbers for an example, but only giving and taking PR works in both sides interest if the links stay in bounds.

In summary...
Keep building adding content and look for partners with high PR. In looking for a link partner or being approached by one, make sure that the pages PR that is linking to you does not have an unreasonable amount of links.

If you have a PR of 5 with 5 links out and the link partner has a PR of 5 with 300 links... you are giving much more than your getting. Don't base you views just on PR alone.

With all that said... Sean can better answer the question than I can.

Liz,
If you are just starting out, just try to look for sites with good content that will relate to your site, and can benefit your visitors, and the site is in a good neighborhood (meaning no hidden SE tricks).

As far as Google rankings in the SBI Manager, those have nothing to do with PR. Those are your placement in the results, with your keyphrase in quotes. Basically how you rank without PR. Once you get some links in, then you will see your results climb.

Also, keep in mind, new sites have a tendency to fluctuate a lot the first month, then settle in. So get those incoming links, and build more content, it will happen Smile

Just my 2 cents,
Debs

We all get days like that, at least I do and I'd bet a pound to a penny that everyone else does too, even the very successful ones.

This thing is frustrating, no doubt about it. If it's not lack of ranking, it could be pages ranked nicely and brining traffic, but no sales! And if you are making sales, then not selling a high enough dollar amount to make a decent commission Smile

All we can do is keep on keeping on.

If you quit, then you will have to find a new dream.

Sometimes the voices get to me Sad You know the voices I'm talking about. The ones that whisper "What are you doing wasting all this time on this stuff. And for what? You aren't making any money, you dummy!"

But then something happens...

...like on Wednesday, I get an email from a merchant that says "Congratulations you've made a sale - commission $1.10"

$1.10, well it will buy me a bus ride I suppose Smile But stuff like that is enough to let you know that you are not wasting your time completely. And, although $1.10 certainly ain't gonna change your life, it jolts that ol' enthusiasm back into gear.

Could be just the satisfaction of seeing a new page on your site. Even if it hasn't been indexed yet, and therefor it's not actually doing you any good, but it does mean that you have achieved something, and that spurs you on.

If we keep doing things, and keep trying to learn where we may be going wrong, we will get there sooner or later. Smile

I reckon there's more than a little truth in that, Liz.

All the best,
Larry Chamberlain.

That reminds me of a suspicion I have from reading quite a few newbie posts about Google's PageRank (PR).

Judging by the way some questions are phrased, I think a few people actually confuse PR with the position Google gives a site in their search results. As Debs pointed out, they are two quite different things.

I'm not talking about this thread, just making the point in case anyone lurking hasn't realised it yet. Smile

All the best,
Charlie.

Larry, well said! Smile

I believe that this thing will take time and eventually we will reap the benefits. As they say, it's not a 'get rich quick' scheme.

I know the feeling well. One of my web sites lost money for a whole year. It now earns a respectable income.

Every day, make some small improvement to your business, add a new page, get a new new link to the site, write an article and submit it to sites that accept articles, make posts to email discussion lists with your domain name in the signature, look for new places on the Net where you can mention your site...

If you keep making only one small improvement every day, you'll succeed in the end. It's inevitable.

Hope that helps.
