I was thinking about my second SBI subject and since I'm interested in Plasma TVs, I started doing some research at Google to check the water.
There are some pretty good sites about Plasma TV and some of them may be created using SBI.
This site does not give you any useful infromation about Plasma TVs,but the site owner asks you for $1 donation so that he will be able to buy a $11,000 Panasonic Plasma TV! He hopes 11,000 people will donate $1 for him and he set up a Paypal account for that purpose.
To my surprise, his site is ranked #8 at Google for a keyword,"Plasma TV". While we all SBI owners are spending a lot of time for researching,building content-rich site,just hoping that it will be indexed at Google soon.
Is this fair?
According to Ken,your site has to have at least 20 pages to be considered by Google,but this guy's site has only one page? But it's still ranked #8?
The strange thing is that he don't have high ranking in Alexa. His ranking is over 1,000,000. Which means he doesn't really receive alot of traffic. Hmmm .... strange. Maybe people are not really clicking to his website though with all the high ranking.

It doesn't really matter how many pages you have. What matters is that they have links pointing to them. It's much better to have 20+ pages because your own links count but you don't need them.

As was mentioned above, they managed to get listed In Yahoo and they have a few other links - mainly because it's something a bit different. People could link to it because they think the guy is an idiot but it doesn't matter to Google. They treat a link as a good thing - even if it's a link for bad reasons.

The anchor text of the links pointing to it probably say "I want a Plasma TV". So, the links are all helping it's ranking for "Plasma TV".
I wouldn't be too concerned about one's Alexa rankings, as they basically mean nothing. If the guy is ranked 8th for plasma tv and people are searching for plasma tv, he is most likely getting traffic. Now, whether or not he is getting donations is a different story.....

I just want to confirm that it is possible to get good rankings for a one-page site. I have one I built years ago which today has a No.3 ranking in Google for its main key phrase - http://www.LifetimeCustomers.com For ages, it was No.1. (It's PageRank today is zero.)
However, I'm sure that adding at least 20 pages to the site, and having a link on each of them using the key phrase as the text in the link would help things.
It also helps a LOT if you're in a non-competitive, not-often-searched-for

I have a number of one page sites that rank well too, but they are also "off the beaten track" pages. Ironically most of these have never even been submitted to any search engine, neither do they have links to them - at least not to my knowledge.
Actually, I once read a book (do you remember it Allan?) about so called "micro sites". The fellow in question had certainly got his ranked (more than) OK with Google - and they seemed fairly competitive markets. He did have an interesting cross-linking structure, though.

If I did a search hoping to find information on a Plasma TV, and I came to a site where some fool was asking me for a $1 donation, so he could buy one, I would simply close this site and move on.
On the other hand, if I opened a site and found plenty of information about Plasma TV's, a site that helped answer my questions and pointed me to helpful merchants, I would stay put and gain as much information as possible.
Then, if I had to choose between both sites where to buy products, I'd of course go with the one that was the most helpful to me.
Site rankings are nice, but for me it all comes down to quality data and who helps me the most. Perhaps I'm different than the average person, but I doubt it.
I wouldn't even waste my time worrying about such foolish sites in existance and instead keep head down and focused on what my goals are, putting up a good and informative site. There will always be people in the world that take short cuts, but just how far will it really get them?
I choose to set my sights on people like Ken Evoy and Allan Gardyne, who have put in the planning and work, and now are reaping the benefits.
Keep reaching for your goals and don't worry about the "noise" along the way.

I agree wholeheartedly.
Without that MWR being reached regularly, top rankings are little more than vanity. (Don't mention branding.) For each site, you need to find where the best balance is reached.
