Ok, so I want to get somebody to exchange links and their email address is on their website. Is it "unsolicited email" if I do so? I ask because I did this and got reported for "spamming". In my mind, spam is "Get medications 70% direct from Canada" in my inbox 14 times a week. I emailed a related web site for a link exchange.

So what exactly is "unsolicited email"?

To most people, spam is unsolicited bulk email.

However, to some people spam is any email they didn't ask for and didn't want.

If you take the time to find out the website owner's name and write a friendly, chatty email naming that person, naming the website, and praising a particular aspect of the site, very few people will be offended.

I recently heard an ominously broad interpretation that took things a little too far...

A friend of mine who is an electrical engineer (read "is supposed to be reasonably intelligent") recently said that he didn't get too much spam, just newsletters that he didn't read.

When I asked for clarification, he said these were letters he had opted to receive but didn't want anymore.

In other words, even though he had not given the publisher any indication that he didn't want to receive them anymore - let alone unsubscribe - he was labelling them as spam.

He's reasonably net savvy, though not involved with marketing or (surprise surprise) email publishing.

When I pushed him on it, he did admit that it wasn't really spam, but the fact that people are using the label so casually just shows how little idea of the problems (publishers face) most people have.

Just a thought,
Charlie.
