Post subject: Price for database driven website
|
|
|
I am considering posting a job at Rentacoder to have a database driven website made.
I have started a new article site and instead of using html I would like to use PHP and mysql. This way I can simply add a new article to the database and have it appear on my site.
The problem I am having is I don't know what to have as a maximum bid. I want to get good value for my money but I want to avoid offering too little and attracting only those who have marginal skills.
Anyone else had something similar built? Or can you suggest a good starting point bid wise? _________________ Business Owners Guide to Going Online What every business owner needs to know about going online |

Hi.
Rentacoder is great for getting work done, there is no doubt about that. However I would strongly suggest that you look at the different commercial offerings that are around for database driven websites. It sounds to me like you are looking for some sort of content management system (CMS). Well the good news is that there are literally hundreds of these around. Some are particularly suited to article style of posting.
You can find lots of these scripts (many of them free) at www.hotscripts.com.
The process of developing a custom application like a database driven website is not to be taken lightly. It is hard work developing the system, ironing out bugs and then adding in features you forgot you should have included.
I have developed over 15 web based applications including a major CMS for a multi-national direct sales company so I am speaking from some experience. It ALWAYS takes longer and is more difficult that you first imagine.
Good luck!

Thanks Jay
I have been searching around and found several free scripts that will work but haven't committed to one yet. _________________ Business Owners Guide to Going Online What every business owner needs to know about going online |

I had a custom one built for my needs for about $900 on Elance. If you can find a free or pre-built one that works, I'd recommend that you go with that. I simply couldn't find one that offered everything I desired. _________________ Robert

Hi sophist,
I have been using a CMS program and a shopping cart written in coldfusion that a guy name Mike writes. I love it. Below is the site...he has a demo there and it is very resonable.

The script that you need should be quite easy to create. It could be done and tested in one day.
I have done something similar for my music lyrics site.
I wouldn't pay more than $50 for this.
Anyway, if you can find something that works for free, please let me know too. Thanks. _________________ Gerardas Norkus

Sophist,
I'd check out Scriptlance.com as well as rent-a-coder. For what you're looking for with SE friendly URL's using mod_rewrite, a PW protected admin area for adding, removing, and managing the article system, then the front end that divides up the categories and displays the categories.
without a template graphics etc. I'd say put a max bid of 150-200 bucks. You're right that a low bid will attract those that aren't committed to their work, or with lower level skills.
Good luck |
