Hello,
Any ideas on how effectively to promote an International Trade website?
I have launched a website on such topic several months ago; it has more than 1,000 pages (a lot of original content), basically is a free resource for businesses involved on international trade, includes a guide for export import, a B2B directory offering free listing etc...
I would like any suggestion other than 'incoming links', 'adding in directory' etc..(I have tried it) to promote it; I mean any specific FREE way to get exposure in the area of International Trade.
I built this website for users as businesses as well as people and students looking for info and news on export, import and global trade.
Unfortunately I can't locate any forums or discussion groups, and lists on topics as international trade etc... Anybody knows about online communities devoted to this area (other than B2B Marketplaces, Trade boards etc...) where to discuss over these topics?
As I have on my website a couple of blogs, where almost daily I add fresh content, that means are time/resources consumption, I would like to ask you:
1- Are blogs as effective as articles distribution to get traffic?
2- Is better this solution I opted for - blogs included in my own site, or blogs hosted on any blog portal (e.g. blogger) , I mean concerning on SEO, traffic etc...
3 - If I remeber good I read in this forum, the explosion of incoming links can harm the website, which may experience a long sandbox time. Am I getting into such risk, with my blogs, as links coming from RSS distribution can quickly increase and go out of my control?
Your opinion on the topics I listed above, as well as the one from any members of this board wil be strongly appreciated.

Sandro, I don't have any first-hand experience with blogs, so it would be better if someone else answered this question.
As a general rule, you want your links to come from a wide variety of domains, you want your keywords used as the anchor text in those links, if possible you want the sites which link to you to have a lot of links going to them, and you want to get links from sites that are related to your topic. If you can achieve all those things using blogs, go for it!
An explosion of links to your site can definitely cause problems with Google, which likes you to build links slowly. Yahoo and MSN don't seem to be so fussy.
I think the most important factor to consider in this case is this one: you want your links to come from a wide variety of domains. _________________ Allan Gardyne

well to start off.. all that blog n ping hype(1 page per 15 second by rick butts) has lead blogs to be bit ineffective.. but If you play rite. you can get traffic again, like in normal sites. You need to put other blogs related to you in links(blogroll).. There might be few blogs which r old n getting quite a good traffic... If you can get link back frm them. You can increase traffic..
Just 1 link from 1 blog(not even great traffic)is giving me around 25-30 new visitors daily...

Well Host blog on your own domain. not only you can keep watch on your traffic... but it's also preffered.

Like Allan said. This is now more important for blogs... it seems to me that blog n ping days are almost gone.
If you have daily updated blog with proff content.. then lots of sites might also want to link to you.

It can happen with google. Yahoo doesn't mind at all... I luve yahoo for that.. I get so many visitors from yahoo that its crazy...
with RSS distribution this will effect ur incoming links but I Say its better to go with it.

Dou you mean a normal link exchange (link placed inside the post) with other blogs?
Do you mean trackback? As I have never understood what it means, do you mind to explain me that in a few words? (What I know about trackback is: the BlogX related to mine, publish a part of my post and then I have to place a link to BlogX at the bottom of my post - through trackback function. Sorry for my silly question, what is the advantage for me? Basically I give to BlogX content and PR, not to mention the content duplicate risk...Am I missing anything?)

hey.. blogs r my domain
Well Varun I would like to take advantage of it for a question more over this domain:wink:
It happen some blogs publishing content taken from my own blog, rank better than me for the same post (same title); even sometimes my own post is not indexed. How can I cope this situation?
- Over the explosion of incoming links : can the signature in the posts of the forum generate a explosion of incoming links? I mean, how the SE weigh the incoming links originated from discussion boards?

yup normal link exchange... blogroll is something like a link place on your blog menu.. which typically says that these sites you visit.
trackback allows will enable your visitors to easily leave their feedback, opinion or a comment on the subject at hand. Using trackback, you can automatically notify another blog about your new entry and a link to your entry will appear in that blog's list of trackback pings

it happens and there's not much you can do about it... only thing is you can ask the person to use the article ecerpts n give the link to u...
the best thing is you can do is whenever you post.. You ping Yahoo, technocratic and other Blog search enignes. www.pingomatic.com. and There is also option in your blog to autmatically ping some engines after each post(like blogger allows only weblogs.com ping) for rest u hav to manually ping. this will at least get Serps notice ur blog faster
incoming links.. well if you look at blogs n websites.. theres not much difference in b/w them.. besides blog are more of personal in nature... if you look into technical issues.. blog's templates are better designed to get your whole site(blog) easily indexed. unless you really screw up your template nicely
it's hard for me to say how SE will see link to a blog.. I don't hav link from here or any other forum... even if u have you won't see the link repeated too many times.

I'm in a similar situation as you describe here, and here is what I've had success with on my B2B site ...
1. Capture contact information. With at least a free newsletter, capture specific information about your visitors. This lets you contact them with relevant information to attract them back to your site.
2. Utilize off-line mailing lists. Start with your local market, using postcards to invite visitors to do something specific at your website. (i.e. download a free white-paper, participate in a survey, ...)
3. Treat your website like any other part of your business. Make your site a tool for your target audience with as much value as any other service you provide, but don't make it the only thing you offer. Combine with physical products or services.
4. Work with sites reaching the same audience. Offer problem solving articles, tools, and tips to individual sites that best complement what you are providing to the same audience.
Blogging is great, article submission is great, but neither mean anything if they aren't targeted to your specific users. And, once your users visit your site, that means nothing either unless you give them plenty of reasons to return.
If you serve sales & marketing executives in B2B technology and professional services industries, then private message me with your site, perhaps you're a match for my visitors.
