hi everyone - Are there any reasons to not use a hit counter ? I like the idea of being able to see what 's going on, but are there any adverse reasons/affects when you use one ? _________________ http://favoriteprojects.com

Here's my understanding of hit counters. The problem is that they don't really reflect much that's meaningful. For instance, they may show how many times the page has been viewed, but that won't tell you how many people actually viewed it, how many of those hits were the person just clicking Refresh, etc. 10 page hits doesn't mean 10 different people viewed it.
Also, those numbers are there for all to see. If your numbers are low, people might get the idea that the site is not very popular. You don't want to give that impression.
If all you want to do is monitor the traffic, there are better ways to do that. Many web hosting plans provide traffic statistics (although any stats will be skewed to some extent), and I think there are programs out there that can be purchased or subscribed to that will monitor your traffic.
If you're still sold on hit counters, there are some javascript ones available around the Net. Google for javascript hit counters and I'm sure you'll find lots of pages that have the code you can use.

Thanks Tara - Statcounter looks like a really ggod thing to have. I'm going to try adding it to my new site (will be online in about 2 days, maybe less). I'm quite interested to see what I can learn from it. It looks like it records just about everything you would ever want to know about your visitors. If it does everything they say it does, I don't see why anyone would want to know all that stuff. _________________ http://favoriteprojects.com

Hit counters can either be some wanted 'fluff' or it can poo-poo your potential sales and or traffic, including your credibility.
Here's why...
- Unless your counter reports thousands of visitors, and or hits incrementally on a daily basis, psychologically -- the viewer will "move on" in less than 5 seconds
- and physically, he leaves your site (he won't return, either)
- Counters can be 'faked', and savy users know this
- Never post a hit counter, unless you are in the big league of [insert eCommerce household name business here]
Posting a hit counter is like posting your bank account statements. If you don't want the world to know what's in your pockets, then don't use a hit counter. |

You can get your hit counts from your web servers logs. Having a hit counter that displays on the page doesn't impress anyone until the numbers are in the hundreds of thousands or millions. I don't see the point. _________________ Chuck Waters

I use StatCounter on all my sites. It should also be noted that it is much more than just a "hit counter". It has many useful reports like where your visitors are coming from, what keywords they are using in the different search engines, how long they are spending on your site etc.
It's a great tool, and like Tara mentioned, it can be set to invisible so your visitors don't even see it. _________________ Save time adding articles to your sites with EZ Article Publisher!

Hi,
If you have a decent host, they should be able to provide some kind of web stats program via a control panel such as cPanel. This way you could see all the visitors as well as tracking where there all coming from.
It might be worth asking your host, as you may have overlooked it. _________________ Trading-Web-Solutions affiliate program |

I've used hitslink and statcounter - both are decent.
Allan had once recommended Urchin - which is provided by some hosting companies with their service.
As per Kevin's point, I agree that you tend to get a little more with the paid services (while I haven't explored Urchin yet).
They not only tell you the keywords used to find your site - but also provide a breakdown of which search engine was used in the search.
So if it shows 100 clicks to your site on the keyword "best lawn chairs" - a service like hitslink will also tell you which se's sent the 100 (i.e. 50 from google, 10 from MSN, 40 from yahoo).
Not necessarily like the way I'm describing
but it's an extra level of detail which some might care about.
I for one have cheaped out and gone back to the free stats provided via my hosting company.

Thanks Tara
Is statscounter affordable? I should maybe add it back to a few of my sites. Actually, I do have hitslink on a couple still - but would be interested in reviewing statslink again.

I am fairly new and love the features of this free version. I am working on getting more traffic obviously but for a newbie like me, this is the ticket. _________________ Learn How to Start Your Own Internet Business
