Hello everyone,

I have a question for all. I'm already in the process of exchanging links with other websites. I was told that link exchanges will eventually help improve you page rank. I know i've posted the question on the message boards before, but the reason i'm posting it again is because i just finished swapping links with this website that has over 30 pages of links, but has a page rank of only 2. Could someone explain how link exchanges help improve one's page? How long does it normaly take for one's website to change in terms of page rank? And once you get a page rank, could it go down? For example, if you have a page rank of 2 and you stop marketing, could you drop to a 0 or a 1? If someone could fill me in, it really would be appreciated.

oneway links are much better than link exchanges. Write an article with your link in it and post it in article directories.

Exchanging links with sites can do more harm than good at present. Though Yahoo/msn doesn't seem to take much note of it, Google seem to quickly target sites that rely heavily on reciprocal linking than one-way links.

But make sure you don't list those articles on your site, else you'll be penalised for duplicate content. In other words, have unique content on your site.

I m yet to find any site gettin penalized for duplicate content.. and infact I have seen site with duplicate content at top 10 google resutls... and that duplicate content was stolen from me Rolling Eyes

oh don't exchange links with sites having more than 30 links... it's not fruitful... it's much better if u write some fresh articles n give it to some webmaster if exchange for 1 way links...

I don't try to get links for PR. It would do me little good because I am in one of the most competitive areas on the net. I get links strictly for the traffic. When you dothat, I have decided that it really doesn't matter much what the other pages have for page rank.

Now temper what I just said with the fact that I am not blowing the doors off of anything in my quest to make a living on the web. I am showing slow but steady progress in my numbers each month on my main site. Now working on other sites to bring them along.

I prefer to do articles than exchange links. Writing articles is alot quicker and better for getting one way links.

So if I put the link to my website here

[Definitely NOT here!! URL removed. Go to PROFILE and then edit the signature file box using BBCODE (refer to the adjacent link to a tutorial) and all your messages will instantly display your URL in the signature file as long as you tick the box to include your signature - Moderator]

does that count as a oneway link to my website, or does it have to be in a specific section of the other (in this case, this one) site? If I want to improve my rank, should I just start bouncing around to forums, sticking my link everywhere?

Before you try that on any forum, make sure you read the forum instructions first. The rules differ from forum to forum. For example, some allow you to have a signature file in which you can place a link, some don't.

if you are going to exchange links make sure your keyword is in the actual link instead of your website name. It will give you a much higher ranking in the search engines

Some reciprocal linking is not bad but you should never rely on it. Too many reciprocal links and you may do yourself harm so keep them to a lower percentage of your overall links. Get the articles out there and start asking for some one way links when the chance arises.

I'll agree with that; never put your eggs in one basket.

Could you elaborate on what you mean by "harm"?

robertb,

I was a little vague about "harm" for a reason. Depnding upon who you talk to about reciprocal linking you will hear that it is a) always good b) okay c) won't do your site any good d) will get you banned from search engines. The truth is that very few people "know beyond a shadow of a doubt" because of the large number of variables that search engines take into account when looking at sites.

Search Engines look for things that are un-natural and only having reciprocal links or having a high percentage of them is un-natural unless you are trying to manipulate the way your site is ranked. (Search Engines told us links were important and then surprise - people try to get them anyway they can. hehe) At some point an engine will say - "you are trying to manipulate me and so I will de-value your reciprocal links" or perhaps something worse. (reciprocal links are not as highly valued as one way to begin with) So it's possible with too much recip linking you could lose rankings or have your site not raise anymore. Either of those would be harmful in my book.

It should be noted that all of the engines have their own algorythms which deal differently with recip linking. Google is likely going to be the toughest which why there was mention earlier in the tread that someone found a huge number of recip links on a site and it was a page rank 2. (Not that page rank really means what it once did) Yahoo and MSN are more forgiving but you can run into trouble with them just the same.

Lots of links are good - but only when they seem to come naturally. You would rather have 10 links from authority type sites than 1000 link exchanges from sites that have low PR.

Hope that was helpful. Smile

Sure, article posting helps to increase the Google page rank, but remember that the most important thing is what's is a link text or anchor of a site that links to your site. And this link text must be your keywords that you try to optimize for search engines! You must ask other sites to use the exact keywords that you are targeting if you want to rank high with search engines. However, also make sure to change your link text time and again, because search engines might punish you for spamming.
