There is a certain topic (keyword) that I have targeted on some of my pages.

Let's say the word is "widgets"

Someone has purchased an AdWords ad - it displays in AdSense on my site - and the title is "widgets info"

If someone clicked on the link, they would be taken to ewoss.com

"Widgets" does not even appear on the page. Evidently ewoss.com hopes to make money off visitors by some means, but they are paying dearly as "widgets" is not an inexpensive term.

My question is, why does Google allow this? This is not the only example I've seen. Aren't people going to get frustrated in being misled by ads like this and maybe not clicking the ads in the future?

Search spamming, AdSense terms not being enforced and AdWords without standards. Is Google going to last long at this rate?

Do you expect Google to check every one of the millions of ads that run every day?

As for the widget person, if he is stupid enough to pay for traffic that is no use to him, then he won't keep that up for long.

They wouldn't have to check every ad that runs every day - just new ads as they are submitted. Correct me if I'm wrong, but I believe Overture reviews ads - that's why it takes a few days to get an ad started.

I don't know whether or not it is of no use to him, I just don't see the obvious connection.

The larger business question, in my opinion, is does Google (and by extension AdSense publishers) expect site visitors to be so "stupid" to keep clicking on ads that take them to a page that doesn't offer what the ad title promotes?

And that's not to mention the ads that take them to a page that's clearly just a bit of content thrown up to generate an AdSense display.

One of the advantages that Google offers over Overture, or more correctly, Yahoo Search Marketing, is that you can run an ad almost instantly without having to wait for an editor to review your site. Google pulls ads that don't get a high enough click-through ratio, so there's an automatic quality control in place that's defined by the users' decisions whether or not to click the ads.

So quality is determined by whether or not the user clicks the ad, not what is at the other end - not whether or not the ad is deceptive?

I have heard of Google pulling deceptive ads before, I just imagine it's not on their priority list.

I'm sure they're happy to pull deceptive ads, but chances are you'll need to tell Google about the ads. I doubt they have people searching them out. Most people aren't going to place deceptive ads in the first place because they won't convert well enough to make the expenditure on the ads worthwhile.

My question is how this is profitable for the advertiser that is using the deceptive ad.

As an advertiser myself, I find it difficult enough to get a good roi even with using thousands of highly targeted words muchless words which have little or no relevance to the click thru.
