Ok, let me throw out some questions for all those more experienced than me in using autoresponders and maintaining email lists--When did you start? Did you start as soon as your website was up or did you wait until a certain visitor threshold was met?

It wouldn't hurt to start collecting email addresses ASAP. You don't need to send out regular newsletters as if you had a large pool of readers, but you can send them updates when you post new pages, just so they know you exist.

And giving away a freebie is a good way to increase subscriptions.

Yes ... that's exactly what I do ... I set up a "Site Update" ezine (for want of a better word) that is sent out each week telling subscribers what has changed on the web-site ..

This provides three ways of getting the "what's new" message across ...

1. What's New web page.
2. Site Update ezine.
3. What's New RSS feed.

Start collecting email addresses now, even if you get only one a week. You can archive your newsletters online. It's a way of adding content to your site, so the work won't be wasted. I think the first edition of APn went out to about 300 people.

If its double opt-in you can send emails bimonthly or monthly. More frequent than that, I guess nobody likes it.

Well if you are getting 1 or 2 hits a day to your website - the $20/month autoresponder may be too costly.

Many webhosts have "free" autoresponders you could use until you get to a decent list size.
