PageRank indicator in the Googlebar.
Hello everybody,
Does anyone know why pages that have a PageRank number,
however regularly not show up in the Googlebar?
(the PageRank field stays grey)
(it seems that when this happens, the ranking of that page
in a Google search, is also lower imo)
Appreciate your contribution.

Google's update of PR has been very intermittent and hard to determine. As I understand it, Google used to do a major index & PR update once a month. Now it appears Google is going with more of a fresh update, that fluctuates a lot for new sites in particular. I haven't seen a post yet that gives any information, or opinion, on when the PR is calculated or updated to the bar.
I have read if you search for backlinks, Google only shows those backlink pages with a PR of 4 or greater (some have said 3). I haven't checked each backlink to see whether it is a 3 or 4 personally.
I do know however, if your links in go to www.domain.com and you load domain.com to see your PR, you will likely get a grey toolbar. When you check PR, always check with the same setup as you have used for creating links.
Hope this helps some,

Generally you will see a grey toolbar when you search Google and visit one of the sites. Not quite sure why this is but there could be three reasons.
1. It's a bug.
2. They don't want webmasters searching for relevant sites to link with and basing their decisions on PR.
3. Due to the fact the the toolbar PR doesn't relate to the real PR (because of the continuous update), they dont want their visitors to visit a highly ranked site and see that its a PR 0.

PR is probably updated continuously but it takes three weeks for a page to reach it's optimum level.
Google is updating every day - adding new pages. Once a new page goes in, it will tend to move up in the rankings about once a week for three weeks (usually a Monday). Google appears to be gradually updating the off page factors as it finds them.
The PR shown in the Toolbar seems to be updated about once a month but it has no effect on rankings - the PR is factored into the rankings before the toolbar updates.
BTW, this is all theory - based on what I've seen with my pages.
Cheers

Sean,
Thanks for the update. PR and how it relates to the toolbar seems to be a popular subject on forums, but yours is the first post I've read that has helped me understand it better.

Debs and Sean, I appreciated your contribution.
I noticed that when you search Google and visit
one of the sites, the PR toolbar stays grey,
indeed like Sean said.
However with some sites (from the Google search results page)
the toolbar does not stay grey but shows the PR number.
There must be a reason why one site has shown it's PR
and another has not.
When you take the url of the sites which PR stayed grey,
to your url address line in your browser and open
the site, then the toolbar doesshow the PR number.
I asked the Google Team about this matter but got
this somewhat general answer from them:
"Unfortunately, it appears that our PageRank feature is incompatible with some aspect of your system. We are currently working on improving our PageRank feature for future toolbar versions"
I think we'll have to do with that for the moment.
Regards,
Jim. |

A simple tactic to overcome this is as follows:
When you access a page and the toolbar is displayed as GREY, simply go to your "Page Info" tab on the toolbar and click on "Cached Snapshot of Page" (Not sure if this works with the new google toolbar) then when the page has completely finished loading - This is important, then just click you back button on your browser and - VOILA!
Not sure why this works but it seems to 95% of the time..
Best Regards,

Thanks for the tip, Wesley.
It's always good to hear of a workaround for "shouldn't happen, but do" cases such as this.
Cheers,
