Post subject: Squeamish about providing SSN
|
|
|
I'm preparing to sign up for CJ this week...completely understand that CJ is required to submit tax data to the IRS about earnings and thus needs my social security number, since I'm operating as a sole proprietor. Does anyone have any reliable info regarding the SAFETY of doing this, given the current proliferance of ID theft? I feel safe giving the info to the government (they have access, anyway), but CJ and cohorts are an unknown to me.
thanks |

ID theft OVERALL is pretty rare as a percentage of the population, but I can understand your hesitation.
If you don't feel secure submitting your SSN over the Internet, I suppose you could contact CJ by telephone and provide them with it.
But as you said, CJ does need that information to mail a 1099-MISC to the IRS and you at the end of the year if your earnings are over $600. Even if you think your earnings will be below that, CJ will still need it just in case if you do cross the threshold. _________________ Robert

Post subject: set up an EIN

heirloom,
if you set up a corp or llc, then you give your EIN, not SSN.
I especially don't like that most affiliate programs I have seen, are on unencrypted pages, so your SSN would be sent in cleartext over the internet. When I get started in this biz, I will set up a company first.
ID thieves can't do as much with a EIN. |
