My first post...

Okay, here goes -

I've been following James Martell's methods and finally got serious in September of 2004.

Since then, with the use of Guru.com writers and a game plan, I have built (or am currently building) 6 websites - each consisting of between 75 and 150 niche focused articles.

Many have been indexed - but, many are still "waiting" on the spiders.
(Now I know what "watching the grass grow" is like.)

I read Allan's 18 Steps and I realize that patience IS part of the game.

Q: Does anyone have any experience on the variables (timelines) for how long, once published and indexed before rankings begin to mature and traffic becomes steady (and strong)?

Q: Is anyone (not you Allan or James Wink ) in this forum actually full time, making a living, soley from Internet Publishing? (I just need a confidence boost with this question)

I'm actually making a little money (car payment Wink ) with @d$e^$e, but no affiliate sales yet. (What?!? I didn't break any Google rules here... Cool )

Still far off from the $500.00/site goal that James shoots for. But, some of the sites are only 2-3 months old... so I don't expect it... yet.

Would love some input from Allan Gardyne if possible - Allan, James Martell and Jim Daniels are my "big 3 Internet teachers" that I am learning from.

I created 3 JM-style sites:
1st: 140 articles, 7 month old, indexed, but still sandboxed by Google PR0
2nd:150 articles, 5 months old, PR3
3rd:135 articles, 3 months, indexed, but still sandboxed, PR0.

Spent a small fortune by now on buying permanent backlinks as reciprocal links are too difficult to get by with these low PRs, even using Arelis or payed campaigns. I am still miles and miles from James goal for starting sites. Very few affiliate sales. Mostly Adsense.
All in all quite disappointing so far.

I understand your frustration. This is the toughest stage of all, when you've done a really decent amount of work but aren't seeing any useful results yet.
This is the stage when so many people give up. You have to work through it.

Keep adding fresh content to your sites and keep getting good links to them and eventually you'll see results.

Look for ways of getting one-way links to your site, for example by writing articles and getting them published on other sites. Ezinearticles.com is a good place to start. You can find plenty of posts on the subject on this forum. Try a search for "submit articles" and similar phrases.

Research ways to get one-way links. You want to get a link to your site on as many relevant sites as you can. Here are some ideas to get you started:

Hi Andrew,

Wish I had more time (my life is going to be crazy for the next 8 weeks or so) but I wanted to very quickly answer your second question with a resounding 'YES".

I've been making my living completely online full-time since mid December 2004. It's not easy, and I'm not rich (yet), but I do make about 1.5 times the amount that I made in my regular 9-5 job when it ended.

You CAN do it. Like anything worthwhile in life, it isn't easy, but it IS possible. Smile

Hope this helps!
~Mike

Mike,

Thanks for a real life example. I have talked with a few people that are full time making their living online and the response is always the same. Patience, perserverance and some good old fashioned hard work.

Good luck with your move (checked out your blog) and thanks again for the boost of confidence.

I started my first Martell style site about 1 and a half months ago and I am in all the major search engines. I am sandboxed in google however. So I need to concentrate on adding content and gaining incoming links and I should move to the top of the SERPS.

This does work, but like everyone else says, it takes time for the website to mature and gain traffic. My suggestion is to do what I am doing. While waiting for the traffic to come, start building another site.

Hello JustBuildIt,

My better half spent 2 months last year sorting out what was left of our garden after weeks of 30+C temperatures and very little rain.
Books were read, tools and seeds bought and planting completed.

Five months later there is a rich growth of green grass and the satisfaction of a job well done.
Along with a humbling appreciation of the part nature played in the whole project.

In your posts (and in Sean`s reply) I can see all the same elements that went into the gardening project - preparation, persistence, expectation, apprenticeship. And all the time having to trust in the 'nature' of Google, Yahoo etc to grow the keyword seeds you so diligently planted.

JM's comments about the $500 per month for a site is relevant for him - as I think his early experiments some years ago showed that was possible.
Well, that's his garden and a fine one it is too.
In beginning allotments might be prudent to aim at an average of a 1$/day/page (whoops! did i mean per day or per month? Magic of Thinking Big!!) and raise the bar (in dimes) as that was achieved - if nothing else it would inspire the planting of more seeds in the right places - I mean, keep writing the content.

And they'd better be good seeds - I mean quality content - else mother google (sorry, meant mother nature) will shrivel it up and prune it out without mercy.

To end this week's posting I warmly recommend George Leonard's wonderful book "Mastery" for staying the course and enjoying the game.

Affiliate Enlightenment? Niche Research and profitable content creation.

Be patient and profitable Wink

JustBuildit,

Regarding your timetable question, remember that the time to get indexed and ranked are usually very different. Here is another example that I think is pretty standard for most people: After 3 weeks the site had 15 pages, all indexed in msn & yahoo, several in google. At 4 weeks it had top 10 rankings for several main keywords, but others had no rank at all. Google indexed it quickly, but was slower to rank, taking an extra 2-4 weeks to rank a few keywords in the top 30-50. Now my msn rankings are rocketing, but it feels like I've almost stalled in Yahoo... go figure !!

Im not sure about the sandbox issue - I got lucky with a PR3 7-8 weeks after the site went live. But next month, it could all be different. And while Yahoo had all of my pages indexed within 2 weeks, it dropped most of them on the 6th week !! And although pages dropped from Yahoo, my rankings for almost all keywords remained the same - yahoo directed traffic to my home page which is not even optimized for those words. I still haven't figured that one out !

So a lot depends on timing, which keywords/pages get indexed quickly, etc. Bottom line, is just do the basics, and continue to improve your site slowly --I dont think its necessary to blast out hundreds of articles like some recommend. Traffic keeps growing, and I only add a couple new pages a month.

So the bottom line is not to be too concerned at the speed of growth, the latest PR, or where you rank in Google. You'll be surprised at where traffic comes from. Just try to enjoy the building process. Its like collecting coins or whatever - sometimes you find gold quickly, and other times, you go for months with little progress. Watching the clock (or timetable) only raises the frustration index Smile
