Hi
My site just got accepted into Gimpsy.com today. Anyone know of any added benefits of being listed here? |

That listing basically won't help with your rankings on the major search engines. They use a tracking/redirection script so you don't get any PR/Link Popularity.
Whenever you get listed in directories that us tracking scripts, you can see if the link will help by going to http://www.delorie.com/web/headers.html. Enter the URL that the directory uses to link to you. You will see that most use a 302 redirect which doesn't help. If they use a 301 redirect, it will help. Google in particular passes PR along 301s.
Cheers

So in a nutshell, it's pretty worthless. I guess I can just hope that either some major engine will start using the listings OR gimpsy will start using 301s.
Interesting info, though. Never knew about the 301 / 302 stuff. Thanks! |

You'll sometimes find that directories that use redirects will still have a direct link somewhere. For example, the script that I use for my directories provides a "Rate This Site" link with each listing. The URL provided from that page is actually a direct link.
I did have a look around that Gimpsy site but it seemed like every link was using a tracking script.
BTW, if you or anyone reading this knows how to write scripts, there is a big market for directory scripts. If they are designed to use 301 redirects then that's your USP. It would definitely sell (IMHO).
Cheers

Hello Sean.

This point came up in another thread (quite a while ago), when I explained about using 301 redirects to move a domain's host in a SE-friendly way.
At the time, no one was certain how well Google handled 301s regarding PR. Your view is good news, as far as I am concerned.
All the best,

So there is - I missed that before. I assumed it was just showing the URL but it is clickable.
Therefore, that listing will help. How much it will help will depend on how many other sites are listed in the category but it still counts.
Charlie
A 301 is the only redirect that passes PR. It's not an automatic thing though. In the past it appeared to take a couple of updates for it to happen. Now that they don't have a monthly dance I'm not sure of the timing but it probably takes a couple of crawls.
Cheers

Thanks for the clarification, Sean.
