Post subject: Health Problems An Obstacle To Success?
|
|
|
Greetings all,
I'm finding that 7-8 years of relentless computer use has
earned me computer related health problems that are now the
biggest obstacle to my continued success in online business.
I'm sure our moderators will agree that this is _not_ the
place to discuss our health problems in detail, offer
solutions etc.
But I am curious whether computer induced health problems
are an issue for other members of the Net business
community, and if so, to what degree.
Perhaps this poll might determine the degree to which
computer induced health problems are an obstacle for our
community and, if there is interest, we could start a thread
that limited itself to pointing to other forums where these
health issues could be appropriately discussed?
Moderators, please kill this one with my blessings if you
find it to be too far off topic.

I've worked with keyboarding as a typist, then computers, for over 20 years. I have the start of carpel tunnel syndrome but I just keep trucking keeping the ibuprofen close.
I know at some point, I will face surgery but also know it can be corrected. I also have very poor eyesight (hereditary), and keep my monitor at 800x600. I also don't hesitate to use the resize text feature when necessary as I browse the web.
In case you haven't guessed, I voted for #3 because at this point they aren't a significant problem for me. I deal with them best I can.

Hello Phil.
Very interesting survey...
I'm at the keyboard about 70 to 80 hours most weeks, and I'd class myself a #3 man...
Right hand, fingers and wrist ache often from mouse.
Eye strain (and headaches later in the day) also.
I am far from crazy about this aspect of things. I used to do a job that many people would consider much more life threatening than this, but I survived virtually unscathed (at least as far as I can tell).
I think if I died a slow death from symptoms like these, the irony would kill me!
Cheers,
Charlie. _________________ "Before I speak, I have something important to say."

No carpel tunnel... one of the advantages of being a "self taught" typist. Every time I sit down a think.... I really need to learn how to type I try it and can feel the stress it would bring.... then I go back to the Gary method. a fast couple of fingers.
I also exercise every morning to at least get some movement, now if I could just get away from the java
There is another side of this. I met many people that hate their job and the mind just doesn't "function", because they don't have to. Most of us have a very active mind... and that's a great thing.

Ok Charlie, the hand thing could be the start of Carpel tunnel, it's very common, that's what I experience too.
Eye strain and headaches ... that I don't have anymore, even with all my time on the computer. Have you considered putting your font sizes bigger? It really helps! Or look into glasses to use while working on the computer, with a special coating for glare reduction. I always have this coating on my glasses and I noticed a huge difference the first time I had it applied. Just a thought to help you be more comfortable

Carpel Tunnel Syndrome... what will you American's think of next? We'll probably end up with it over here in 5 years, or has the net spread things up?
Yes, I've heard it called repetitive strain injury, but nothing more specific than that. I've found 2 finger typing OK, and control codes instead of mouse help, when possible. I used to have some vibration problems with the hands in a previous job, too, so maybe that's compounded things.
Anyway, before I turn this into a session of hypochondriacs anonymous...

Thus far, I've relied on regularly focusing on something in the far distance, and this seems to help. I also think the glare might be high on my monitor which dates from 1997.
Thanks for the ideas, anyway, Debs. I'll certainly try the larger fonts. Oh, the slipping myth of eternal youth...
All the best,
Charlie. _________________ "Before I speak, I have something important to say."
