I wonder if someone could explain where/how you would capitalize on key words that are considered profitable ? Does this mean that these would be good topics to use for affiliate links to a supplier ? Or does this have to do with something like adsense, where you get paid when somone clicks on an ad that deals with some topic ?

There are at least three types of "profitable" keywords or key phrases.

1. People bid high prices per click on Google's AdWords for certain phrases. If your site covers that topic and you're displaying Google AdSense ads on it, you earn a share of that money.

2. Sometimes people talk about "potentially profitable" key phrases when they identify phrases which are in great demand (many people are typing them into search engines) but there is little supply (few people have build web pages using those phrases.

With one of those potentially profitable phrases you have less competition. If you build a web page using that phrase, you have a better chance that your page will be found in search engines. So there's more chance your page will be "profitable".

3. If you were paying for pay-per-click advertising and using certain key phrases which gave you a good return on your investment, you'd regard those phrases as profitable ones, too.

Thanks Allan - I wish I knew more stuff. Its kind of frustrating when you're starting out, and you want to know everything now.

Just take it one step at a time. I knew nothing at all about this stuff when I started, either!

Just a friendly tip... you could make the URLs in your signature clickable links by clicking on Profile and following the instructions.
