If links to your site are in the form of banners or graphics of some kind, does the Alt tag act as the "anchor" text, or do graphic links have little value when it comes to improving your page rank?

The Alt attribute doesn't count as the anchor of a banner link. It does help PageRank, as it is still a link going to your site, you just don't get the keyword anchor text used for the link. Graphic links won't help your site rank for a specific term (assuming you have good keyword content) as fast as having anchor texted incoming links.

Voasi - how sure are you about this?

Ive always been of the belief alt img tags played a similar role to anchor text in text links, although not as powerful perhaps they still helped in the rankings for the keywords you were targetting in the alt img tag...

I don't think you could use the word similar is a way to describe the Alt tag compated to text links. Thou, I've never seen a controlled test where alt tags image links were being given out to see, if at all, it has an effect for ranking purposes.

I do have a site that I can do a little test case on. I do think the Alt attribute has some effect on the 100+ ranking methods Google gives for a page. It's on the low end of optimizing a site and doesn't come close to comparing it with good keyword anchor text for gaining top SERPs.
