Hi everyone.
One of my SBI! sites, AutoInsuranceLaw.com, has been spidered and indexed by Google. On Friday of last week, I did a paid submission to Yahoo!. On Monday of this week, the submission was accepted. On Friday of this week, the site was spidered and indexed by Google.
Coincidence? I think not.
One of my other SBI! sites was submitted to Yahoo! (not paid) and Google on August 8, 2003. So far, no results from either of them.
But, that's not the topic for this post, which is...
...Analyze This!
On both Google and Yahoo! (which uses Google results in its ranked listings), here are how my pages are ranked:
My home page's primary keyword is "auto insurance law" and is ranked #5. A keyword search for the page's title "state auto insurance law" results in a #3 ranking.
I have fifty state-specific pages with their own keywords (i.e., "Alabama auto insurance law"). Here's how those pages are ranked on Google and Yahoo!:
Position #1 - 6 pages
Position #2 - 34 pages
Position #3 - 8 pages
Position #5 - 1 page
Position #7 - 1 page
In most cases, the 44 pages that were not ranked #1 were ranked just below insure.com/auto/. Insure.com has a Google PageRank of 7/10. Their Alexa Traffic Rank is 18,332.
AutoInsuranceLaw.com, as of today, has no Google PageRank and has an Alexa Traffic Rank of 549,566 (down from 2.8 million on September 14th).
Which begs the question: If the high rankings for my pages on Google are not due to PageRank and Traffic Rank, why did they score so well?
To me, the answer is simple: SBI!
All 51 of the pages above passed the "Analyze It!" test at SBI!
That, along with each page's excellent content (in my humble opinion, anyway), seems to have made the difference in how those pages were ranked.
Any comments?
Take care,
-Bob
P.S. I didn't check all my secondary keywords on Yahoo!, but most of the ones I checked showed up in the top 10 results, and the rest showed up lower, but still on the front page. "PA auto insurance law", a secondary keyword, ranked #2 while "Pennsylvania auto insurance law", the primary keyword, ranked #3. Go figure.
And, as an added note, Overture's Search Term Suggestion Tool shows there were just over 1400 searches last month for my primary keywords. I've heard that you can multiply that number by 10 to get an estimate of how many times those keywords were searched for by the other search engines. I'll be happy if I get a decent percentage of those clicks. _________________ Bob Hampton

Absolutely awesome and congrats! That was $299 very well spent. Now ... you let us know how your stats change over the next few weeks will you? I am all eyes!

Keep us posted. I like the look... clean and fast. One area you may want to test is your site map. Try adding some text to each of the "states" a 1 line description and throw in another keyword. Sometimes the spiders may look at the map and think it's some kind of link farm. Adding some text may help it look at little more "informational" to the SE.
I'm going back and reworking my site maps this way to add some keywords.
Remember... test, test, test.

Congrats on the Google rankings!
I notice you don't have any affiliate programs on the site (other than SBI)
I seem to recall that Rupert did the same thing.. i.e. he didn't add his affiliate links until AFTER submitting to Yahoo.
So is this the best way to go? Are you more likely to get ranked by Yahoo if your site doesn't appear to be commercial?
I'm just starting a new SBI site so I'd be interested in hearing what everytone thinks about this.

Hi everyone,
I'm going to try the "quote" thingie for the first time. Bear with me if it doesn't look right.

I appreciate what you are saying and I believe it is sound advice. However, should I take a chance on changing something now when the rankings are so good? I'll have to give that some thought.

I had two reasons for not including affiliate programs on this site.
1) To submit the site to Zeal.com as a hobby site.
2) This site was created with AdSense in mind. Once the traffic increases sufficiently, I'll try for an AdSense account. I do not plan to use any affiliate programs on this site unless AdSense turns me down.
Yahoo! could care less whether or not you have affiliate programs on your site when you pay for inclusion. It goes to a business category anyway.
For a free submission, it probably would matter. If they consider it a business site, they will only list you as a paid submission. At least that's the way I understand it.
I think (my opinion only, apology to Rupert if I'm wrong) Rupert said that he left the affiliate programs off in order to submit to Zeal.com. They were probably still off when he paid for inclusion at Yahoo! because he was waiting to be listed by Zeal.com. _________________ Bob Hampton

Another directory to be cautious of is the Open Directory - http://www.dmoz.org - which Google treats very seriously.
The Open Directory editors don't like affiliate sites. So the best way to get accepted there is to build an information-rich, useful site - which just happens to be what AdSense likes _________________ Allan Gardyne
