Post subject: PR Changes if you add WWW to the URL
|
|
|
I have a site, macnstuff.com
on that site is this pagehttp://www.macnstuff.com/mcfl/1/stainremoval.html
It has a PR of 1
If you remove the www. so it is http://macnstuff.com/mcfl/1/stainremoval.html
The PR is now 4
I would think a search engine like Google would be smart enough to know those two pages are the same page.
If you look for backward links for either configuration of the URL there are NONE. No backwards links and a PR of 4. I thought PR depended on back links.......??????
This in itself is a mystry to me. It does raise an issue in my mind. Is it VERY IMPORTANT to always list your pages with the WWW so results are consistant across the internet? Or maybe list them all without the WWW?
Is there an advantage to having the WWW in the URL? _________________ Bob |

It isn't Google that has to set the domains to be seen as the same, it's your host or you.
I read a great article on this the other day on just this thing, I suggest you read the whole thread for a better understanding, but if you can't, then this post is the one that really hit the spot:

Hope it helps,

Hi Debs,
Thank you for the link.
I read the entire 8 pages of that thread. Some of it is over my head -- ASP PHP or whatever all those initials were. BUT it sounds like I can solve the "problem" with a 301 or 302 redirect. OK, I'll read the thread again to be sure.
However, how much does it really matter, I wonder?
For the page I mentioned: http://macnstuff.com/mcfl/1/stainremoval.html if you do a search on google for, grass stain removal the page comes up as #6 on page one. BUT it goes to the www.mac.........stain Page with the PR1 and not the plain http/mac..................stain which has a PR of 4
So, I have a high ranked page in google with a PR of 1 and it has www in the URL. I am wondering why I even care about PR
PR 1 page high ranked in google
PR 1 page has no back links
PR4 page (which actually is the same page) doesn't show up for search terms
PR4 page also doesn't have back links.
This is all very confusing.
OK, address any of this, but one spefic question. Which is the best way to submitt a URL to search engines, with or without the WWW included in the URL? _________________ Bob |

It won't matter at all from a SE point of view, as long as you are consistent. But that's the crux...
Most people will expect the www, and if you go without it, some people will still link to you with the www.
For this reason, I always settle on the www, to try and make all incoming links count.
Hope this helps,
Charlie. _________________ "Before I speak, I have something important to say."

I do what Charlie does for the same reason, people expect the www ... of course I have a few webmasters out there who linked w/o it but that's ok cause it's all set up to handle them seamlessly; both my with and w/o www show the same PR.

I can see now that I need to be consistant. I've had domain web presenses since 1997 or 1998 and always thought both were the same, but with the google PR bar, I'm seeing there is a difference.
I guess from this point forward I'll have to be consistiant in the way I submit URL's, in the way I write links. Either with or without the www in them. From what you say, Debs, about people expecting the www, it looks like the WWW format will be my choice from here on out. _________________ Bob |
