Post subject: Detecting "rel=nofollow"...
|
|
|
Hi All,
Just got Allan's latest newsletter, thanks for informing us regarding G's new "rel=nofollow" tag -- which could potentially be turned into a highly lethal double-edged sword. Allan mentioned about using optilink to sniff out the code. Found another way -- and it's free! All you need is the Firefox browser http://www.getfirefox.com/ tweak it a bit and Voila there's no hiding for those who want to cheat on you.
Full instructions here: http://www.linktutorial.com/detectrelnofollowfirefox.html
Feel free to spread this. Enjoy! |

Thanks. Good one!
Does anyone know if there is a way to use Firefox to detect all the sites linking to you that are using the "nofollow" attribute, or would you have to visit them all one by one to check them out? _________________ Allan Gardyne

Hey, wooz2002, great tip. I just installed it and works like a charm.
Ain't Firefox a great browser! I have been using it for several months and it continues to amaze me. I wish that the Alexa Toolbar worked in it, then I could scrap MS-IE altogether!

What do you use Alexa for, specifically?
Keeping tabs on your own site's ranking or other people's?
Thanks,
Charlie. _________________ "Before I speak, I have something important to say."

Charlie:
I use the toolbar for both. I also use it to see the links and # of for sites.

Here's a new plugin that shows a sites Alexa ranking., and more:
SearchStatus lets you view a sites Google PageRank, Google Category, Alexa popularity ranking, Alexa incoming links, Alexa related links and backward links from Google, Yahoo! and MSN.
The backward links tool is useful, but I particularly like the fact that it displays a sites pagerank and alexa ranking in the status bar at the bottom of the screen

hope this helps you out _________________ Phil Wiley

Post subject: a benefit of the nofollow tag for forums like this
|
|

There is a possible benefit of using rel nofollow on forums like yours and mine Allan. A couple of months ago my long running ozemedia.com site got dropped from Yahoo, and after quite a few emails they hinted, without actually saying so, that it was because of links in my forum.
Links to bad neighbourhoods? (still can't decide if bad neighbourhoods exist)
Using the nofollow tag would stop this problem, wouldn't it? _________________ Phil Wiley

Good point, Phil. I've been wondering how many bad neighborhoods we link to on this forum. I thought search engines would be smart enough to figure out that's not our fault.
It's going to be very interesting to see what happens to rankings if some large sites - forums and other sites - introduce extensive use of rel="nofollow" and other sites don't. _________________ Allan Gardyne

To chime into the links to other sites from forums. My guess is Google won't penalize your site simply because of linking out to a single bad neighborhood; I feel it's more of a proportion.
For example, if a site has 10 outbound links and one is to a bad neighborhood, it's penalty should be more severe than a site that has 1,000 outbound links and one is a bad neighborhood. _________________ Robert

My forum has been running for years and has thousands of outbound links. I'd guess that quite a few of them point to bad neighbourhoods.
I even saw a tip on another forum telling people they could get their sites into Google quickly by going to a forum post (on my site) that's a few weeks old and off the main page. Post a short reply to someone, put DNO in the sunject line, but then put a link to their site at the bottom of the post.
I wasn't too pleased about that. I had a quick look at old posts and found people were linking to gambling sites, etc, by follow this "technique". I deleted the ones I saw, but I'm sure lots escaped my notice.
So adding nofollow is quite tempting. _________________ Phil Wiley

Thanks for the link info, Phil. I have added it to my Firefox browser. It's great. Gives me all the info and then some. This may be the final nail for IE on my system.
