Hello.

I'm a freelance, direct response copywriter.

I recently purchased SBI and find few, if any "profitable" key words associated to the field. Maybe . I don't really know as I don't have a benchmark to go by.

I want to have a high profitability score. So, what does high mean? Would that be 10 or 100?

Keeping in mind that this is a service business, can you help me get a handle on the numbers. I understand the concept behind the relationship between the numbers, but not the numbers themselves.

The ideal would be to find lots of traffic and little competition, but that's not going to be the case from what I can tell. (Actually, it woul be idea if you would just supply me with the phone numbers of buyers and we can get around this Web stuff altogether). Smile

I'm savvy to web marketing, but not under these circumstances and not in conjunction with this particular product (SBI). Generally, I would advise anyone to find a market first, but it appears I don't have that option.

I do have the option to drive traffic from areas other than search engines, but it's to my advantage to get in front of as many serious buyers as I can. Especially for "free".

I sure would appreciate it if you would help me get a handle on this.

Thanks for the air time.

Ok, let's think outside the box for a minute. I take it you are a copywriter, with the ability to research subjects, and write quality articles, sales letters, and maybe even ghostwrite an ebook?

Thinking in terms of product vs. service ... I came up with related topics to copywriting including content and articles. I am sure if you think in terms of "what" you write vs. what you do ... you may even be able to brainstorm more topics that fit your niche.

I went to Overture.com and used their term suggestion tool entering search terms individually for "copy" "ghost" "article" and "content" and came up with a good starting list of topics. Remember ... always sell the solution, the benefit ... not your product.

The terms here are quite popular on Overture, getting 1,000-13,000 searches each over the last 60 days.

Do some SBI research on these terms, and see how they do:

copy writing
web site copy
ghost writer
web content

free content
content provider
free web site content
content advise
free web content
content development

abortion article
physics article
physical science article
environmental article
business ethics article
customer service article
submit article to magazine
accounting article
child abuse article

I then took the above terms and played with the Adwords Refine Keywords Wizard and came up with more terms (the above terms are included below)

Now ... to answer your question regarding how much is enough of a profitability figure to base a site upon? That's hard to answer, obviously you look for the best demand, lowest supply ... Overture gives demand based upon 60 days ... Google Adwords bases demand daily ...

One thing to keep in mind when researching your niche is to check out the top 10 sites on the terms you are favorable toward, if these sites aren't optimized well for search engine placement, a relatively low profitability term, with a high demand, could be a good niche to get into. If the top sites are well optimized, you would probably want to go with a higher profitability on a lower demand but also lower supply side.

With all things, you have to keep the SBI profitability figures into perspective and don't rely on them 100% ... they are really only a tool to help you find more terms relating to your niche. I have very highly competitive terms with low profitability on my site and do quite well.
I do try to stay at the 7.0 profitability and up for all my terms starting out, and also try to keep demand above 1,000, if that helps you at all. I do, however, add more competitive terms after I get about 20 pages of true niche terms built.

Hope this helps,
Debs

Debs,

Thank you for all your hard work.

The "7" and "1000" numbers were what I was looking for. That info has opened up a bunch of words and phrases for me. I'm not looking for the unrealistic, but I just wanted to hear what numbers others consider worthwhile and viable. I would rather have 1 buyer than 1K tire-kickers, ya know?

The words help a great deal, too. Not only to fill this site out, but to start other sites. (Yes, I'll take it one site at a time).

Next stop: Wordtracker to finalize my choice(s) and then on to register my domain name.

This has really given me a jump forward and some confidence - I had been looking at 100 for profitability. I got that number from a shot of Rupert's key word list and there's just no way I can hit that without specializing in an area that would take me away from direct response.

I'm not trying to yak your ear off, but just want you to know how helpful you've been - thanks.

Confusion over the profitability figures comes up time and time again in this forum. I agree with Debs on this.

Thanks for some real numbers, Debs. Smile

Although I know the "profitability" figures are relative, I have still fallen into the trap of over estimating the competition's SEO skills.

Remember, too, that if you have good on-site navigation, you may be able to draw people to the competitive pages, even if they came in via another door.

All the best,
Charlie.

Besides the benchmarking numbers (I also thank you Debs) I agree with Charlie that you'd be surprised to see in many Google categories, for example, how poorly optimized are some high-ranking pages... I've thought of even going through the work of checking against some optimization tools several of the competition pages...

I've also found that some of the first-ten pages in the SEs cover in one or two 200-words, not very detailed or interesting pages what you'd be willing to devote your whole site to or at least whle sections...

As to the numbers, I've dreamed of a secret report benchmarking demand and profitability figures for a whole lot of keywords, categorized and sub-categorized... I'd most definitely pay for such a thing... I know, I know... that's too much to ask, or isn't Wink Is someone already thinking of collecting that information for a e-book? Cool

One more thing, although yours is a service business, don't subestimate the value of well selected affiliate programs directly or indirectly connected to your pages... after your Wordtracker job, give some time to that aspect of the proccess... you might yet be favourably surprised also...

Good luck and keep us posted,

Nelson
